Marriage

Marriage was a recognized union of multiple beings as partners in a relationship, with a wedding ceremony often formalizing the arrangement. Various combinations of genders could enter into a marriage, after an engagement or betrothal of some kind. Weddings were usually entered due to romantic feelings amongst the individuals but sometimes a marriage was arranged or done for political or financial reasons.

Different cultures and planets had different laws and traditions regarding marriage and wedding ceremonies. In some cultures, males had more than one spouse at a time. The Jedi Order did not permit Jedi to marry due to a prohibition on possessive attachment that could lead to the dark side and on Chandrila many got married at the age of fifteen.

Description and traditions

Marriage was the formally recognized union of at least two beings as partners in a relationship. A marriage ceremony, which could be presided over by a clergy member, was referred to as a wedding. Beings of differing genders or the same gender could be married. In some cultures, males had more than one spouse at a time, such as the alpha-bulls of the Crolute species who had senior spouses, junior spouses, and concubines.

Viceroy Bail Organa was the husband and consort to Queen Breha Organa of Alderaan.

Viceroy Bail Organa was the husband and consort to Queen Breha Organa of Alderaan.

When an individual married a reigning monarch, or other high ranking positions in government, they would become their consort. When Bail Prestor married the Queen Breha Organa of Alderaan, he became her consort and was given the titles of Viceroy and First Chairman. Married couples often wore rings to signify their marriage and some chose to change their last name to that of the spouse's.

After the wedding, it was common for some kind of party to be held afterwards. It was also common for newly married couples to take a short trip together after the wedding which was called a "honeymoon". The Grand Regent hotel, on Lanz Carpo, had a room refereed to as the honeymoon suite for newly married couples to stay in which included pheromone enhancers.

Marriages could be dissolved through divorce. A woman who had lost her spouse by death was called a widow, while a man who lost their spouse this way was called a widower.

Betrothal, also known as engagement, was a marital custom of certain cultures. Two beings would be "betrothed" or "engaged" before officially marrying. Some cultures' rules required that betrothed individuals must not engage in reproductive activities prior to their marriage, though this rule was not always followed by the individuals. Some men, chose to have a party the night before their wedding with their other male friends which usually involved alcohol.

On Chandrila, it was traditional for couples to be married at fifteen. The Chandrilan aristocracy also had a tradition of child betrothals. When senator Mon Mothma met up with fellow Chandrilan Davo Sculdun in order to secure alternative funding arrangements for her "charity foundation" (actually a front for her Rebel activities), Sculdun offered to help her in exchange for a chance to introduce his fourteen year old son to the senator's daughter Leida, as she was thirteen years old and would soon be of age to be married under Chandrilan customs.

In the Jedi Order, emotional attachment and possession were forbidden because it was believed they could lead to jealousy and fear of loss, and ultimately the dark side of the Force; for that reason, Jedi were not allowed to marry. Though romantic feelings themselves were not forbidden, as they were considered natural, Jedi were expected to choose the right thing for the Order as a whole.

On Naboo, wedding clothes could be made using wedding fabric which were pieces of cloth that were passed down through Naboo families such as the Naberries. The Nabberries eldest daughter, Sola, chose not to marry, having no interest in romance, and instead use her portion of the fabric to make clothes for her daughters. Her sister, Padmé, however, used her portion to make a veil that she wore for her secret wedding, along with a dress made for her by her former handmaiden, Yané.

In the Alderaanian monarchy, the Rhindon Sword, which was used during the heir apparent's Day of Demand ceremony as well as when they are officially invested as crown prince or princess, would be strapped to the royal's waist by their parent before going to meet their spouse on their wedding day. Breha Organa told this to her daughter, Leia, before her Day of Demand, and how she would one day strap the sword to her waist when she went to meet her husband or wife. However, due to Breha's death and the destruction of the Rhindon Sword this did not happen when Leia married Corellian Han Solo, though Leia felt as though her mother was attaching the sword to her waist during the wedding ceremony.
