In the year 3 ABY, not long after the Battle of Hoth, the forces of the Galactic Empire achieved a successful defense of their Outpost D-34 against an assault by Rebel forces.
After the capture of the BFF-1 bulk freighter known as Onece 3, the Imperials anticipated a retaliatory strike from the Rebels aimed at destroying Outpost D-34. Consequently, they dispatched three TIE/LN starfighters from Alpha, Beta, and Gamma squadrons to patrol the station and resist any Rebel offensive. Their mission was to hold out until the arrival of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Hammer, under the leadership of Admiral Flanken, who was expected to relieve them. Flanken's strategy involved delaying his arrival, as he suspected the initial attack was either a diversion or a probe. He intended to unleash his full power once the Rebels committed their main force.
An assault on the outpost was initiated by a succession of BTL Y-wing starfighters from Petdur, Gold, and Laire squadrons. The Mugaari pirates' Y-wings targeted the fighters, while the Rebel Y-wings launched torpedoes at the outpost itself. However, all of the Y-wings were ultimately destroyed by the station's TIE pilots, including Maarek Stele, flying TIE Fighters. Shortly thereafter, a pair of X-wing starfighters, belonging to Derk and Blue squadrons, attacked the station, but they too were destroyed in their attempt. Stele then noticed Rebel officers attempting to escape in the Scutz, a captured shuttle. After identifying the shuttle, three Assault Gunboats were deployed to disable it. Once disabled, a stormtrooper transport boarded the shuttle, resulting in the capture of the Rebel officers by the Imperials. During this engagement, two additional Y-wings from Red Squadron attacked the station, only to be destroyed as well.
Upon the arrival of the Hammer, the Rebel Ubote group, consisting of three CR90 corvettes, intervened. The Hammer then deployed TIE/sa bombers to support the station's defenses in destroying the corvettes. Maarek Stele maintained his distance, recognizing that his TIE Fighter was no match for the corvettes.
The Imperial forces successfully repelled the Rebel attack, simultaneously capturing several Rebel officers. The Imperials were able to trace the attack back to a Mugaari cargo loading area located in the Tungra sector. This discovery led them to plan a counterattack against both the pirates and the Rebels.
This represents Battle 1, mission 2 within the game.
This narrative reflects the mission's storyline when played on "medium" difficulty. On the "hard" difficulty setting, the Mugaari fighter squadrons are comprised of two fighters instead of one. Additionally, the Rebel Y-wings may be equipped with space bombs in place of proton torpedos.
