Delta-class DX-9 stormtrooper transport

The Delta-class DX-9 stormtrooper transport, an assault vehicle manufactured by the Telgorn Corporation, served the purpose of ferrying Imperial stormtroopers directly into combat zones.

Characteristics

An older design of the DX-9, also found throughout the galaxy

The armaments of the Delta-class DX-9 included eight KT4 laser cannons, four ion cannons, and a pair of projectile launchers typically loaded with proton torpedoes. This arsenal enabled the DX-9 to both incapacitate and subsequently board vessels possessing light to moderate defensive capabilities. Substantial shielding, particularly at the front of the craft, allowed the transport to endure a significant amount of incoming fire from targeted vessels. A universal docking mechanism allowed the DX-9 to attach to most ships, and, when required, the transport could create its own breach in an enemy vessel's hull.

Due to its limited forward-facing weaponry and lack of maneuverability, the DX-9 was susceptible to attacks from starfighters. Consequently, these transports were generally deployed with fighter escorts or as part of a larger coordinated assault force.

History

Throughout the duration of the Galactic Civil War, the stormtrooper transport saw extensive use. Its roles included boarding operations, troop deployment, and personnel transport between various starships. It was also employed to replenish the supplies of bombers and effect repairs on other spacecraft. Noteworthy Imperial teams comprised of DX-9s, such as Omega and Sigma, participated in numerous engagements.

Despite being designed for the Galactic Empire, numerous DX-9s found their way into the hands of other factions, most prominently the Rebel Alliance.

The Galactic Empire eventually developed a successor to the Delta-class, known as the Gamma-class ATR-6 assault transport. The larger ATR-6 omitted frontal laser cannons, opting instead for laser turrets to cover the blind spots inherent in the DX-9's design. The Imperial Navy continued utilizing the Delta-class for the majority of assault and boarding actions, only resorting to the Gamma-class when exceptionally heavy resistance was anticipated. A later iteration, the Beta-class ETR-3 escort transport, combined the frontal armament of the DX-9 with the turret coverage of the ATR-6.

In 6 ABY, forces under the command of Admiral [Devlia], operating from Vladet, deployed one of these transports in a surprise attack against Rogue Squadron's base on Talasea. Following the failure of this covert operation, New Republic forces captured the transport. During the Battle of Altyr V in 10 ABY, DX-9s were used to deploy stormtroopers against the New Republic base located on Altyr V.

Behind the scenes

Within the video game Star Wars: TIE Fighter, the DX-9 is simply referred to as the Transport or TRN. However, official strategy guides have used the designation Stormtrooper Transport to prevent confusion with other craft possessing similar functions, a name that was subsequently adopted in later games within the series.

In Star Wars: TIE Fighter (as well as Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance), the Aurebesh characters "NGC" are visible on the rear section of the spacecraft.

A ship bearing a strong resemblance to the DX-9 transport made an appearance in Star Wars Annual (2015) 1, a one-shot canon comic book published by Marvel Comics on December 9, 2015.
