A guard squad of death troopers served under Moff Gideon and his remnant of the Galactic Empire. The unit was deployed to help pin down the Mandalorian Din Djarin and his allies until a reinforcement broke the blockade formed by the guard and many stormtroopers. Death troopers fought and were eliminated by Djarin's people until the warlord intervened with four more of his guard, turning the tide of the battle.
The guard unit was a squad comprised of death troopers, elite stormtroopers trained to serve high profile individuals in the Galactic Empire. The troopers were armed with E-11D blaster carbines and C-25 fragmentation grenades.
By 9 ABY, the guard of death troopers served Moff Gideon, the leader of a remnant of the Galactic Empire. Gideon eventually deployed the unit to the planet Nevarro to assist in his hunt for the Force-sensitive infant Grogu. As part of a trap, the death trooper unit was positioned outside a common house in Nevarro City where Grogu's guardians were handing over a decoy of the infant to one of Gideon's people. On Gideon's order, the death troopers open fired on the building, killing Gideon's people inside and suppressing Grogu's protectors. The guard was then joined by numerous stormtroopers in a blockade outside the common house, with Gideon standing at their vanguard while he gave an ultimatum to his enemies in the building.
With Gideon leaving, his guard and the rest of the blockade held position before the common house. That was until the IG-series assassin droid IG-11, who was carrying the real Grogu, attacked the Imperial forces in Nevarro City on a 74-Z speeder bike. Disturbing the death trooper guard and the stormtroopers, IG-11, jumped off of the speeder bike and allowed it to crash into the blockade troopers. With the assassin droid engaging the troopers outside of the common house, the rest of Grogu's guardians joined the fray, the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin fighting two of Gideon's guard and killing them with the help of his ally Greef Karga.
While Djarin and his people laid waste to a number of troopers, one of the death troopers planeted a C-25 fragmentation grenade on one of the entrances to the common house, blowing a way in for the death trooper and two others from the guard to enter. The trio open fired on the ex-rebel shock trooper Cara Dune, who had used the common house's interior as a firing position. Dune, though, came out of cover and mowed down the three death troopers. Meanwhile, Gideon and four more of his guard joined the battle, the moff critically injuring Djarin. The Mandalorian's allies helped him into the common house to take cover again. Gideon ordered one of his guard to have Grogu's guardians incinerated, and an incinerator trooper was summoned. Djarin and his allies were ultimately able to escape Gideon's forces with Grogu.
Gideon's guard first appeared in "Chapter 7: The Reckoning" of the first season of Jon Favreau's Disney+ series The Mandalorian. The episode was directed by Deborah Chow and aired on December 18, 2019.
