The Scientific and Medical laboratory on Ossus functioned as a smaller medical facility when compared to the larger Halls of Healing within the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Situated within the Ossus Academy, this laboratory, mirroring its larger version, remained open continuously, providing medical care for any Jedi who required it.
Following the destruction of the Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4 and the conclusion of the Yuuzhan Vong War, the New Jedi Order relocated to Ossus; there, Jedi healer Cilghal established a healing and research center.
Later, during the Galactic Civil War, after the New Republic successfully recaptured Coruscant, Master Cilghal reopened the infirmary located in the Temple. With the assistance of the Jedi High Council, she reorganized the Medical Corps.
The lab's entrance was located at the end of a circuitous route called the Crooked Way, and past Clarity Gate, a trapezoidal archway that overlooked a courtyard featuring a fountain. As it was an entrance to the Academy, all visitors were required to stop and meditate before proceeding further into the complex. Cilghal had a private laboratory connected to the infirmary, which she used for research on topics such as the hive-mind phenomenon affecting those who became Joiners. This large chamber was equipped with numerous monitors used to analyze everything from the bodily functions of various species to samples of alien fungi.
When the Academy was abandoned in 40 ABY, Cilghal transferred all operations to the Halls of Healing on Coruscant, intending to remain there until the Academy could be reoccupied.
Even after Cilghal's death, the laboratory continued to be used and maintained. When the Council moved forward with the Ossus Project, Councilor Kol Skywalker and Healer Hosk Trey'lis attempted to mitigate the devastating effects of the Sith sabotage on those exposed to the unique flora.
