After the destruction of the Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4 and the end of the Yuuzhan Vong War, the New Jedi Order relocated to Ossus where Jedi healer, Cilghal established a center for study and healing.
In the later years of the Galactic Civil War, after the retaking of Coruscant by the New Republic, Master Cilghal also reopened the infirmary in the Temple, and reorganized the Medical Corps with the assistance of the Jedi High Council.
Located at the end of a winding and meandering path known as the Crooked Way, and past Clarity Gate, a trapezoid shaped arch that fronted a courtyard decorated with a fountain formed the entrance to the lab. As an entrance to the Academy, it was required for all visitors to stop and meditate before passing into the rest of the complex. Cilghal maintained a private lab, which was connected with the infirmary where she could study such things as the hive-mind effect that caused those infected to become Joiners. It was a large chamber with several monitors that analyzed anything from bodily functions of a myriad list of different species to samples of alien fungus.
With the Academy's abandonment in 40 ABY, Cilghal moved all operations to the Halls of Healing on Coruscant, at least until the academy was ready to be re-inhabited.
After the death of Cilghal, the lab would still continue to be used and maintained. When the Council decided to proceed with the Ossus Project, Councilor Kol Skywalker and Healer Hosk Trey'lis would try and stop the devastating effects the Sith sabotage had on those exposed to the special flora.
