During the development of the fifth season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the writers pitched an idea for a potential spin-off TV series featuring Young Padawans in the lead roles. A pilot episode was written, but at the end, the project was scrapped and the writers decided to use some ideas of the cancelled show for the Younglings story-arc of the fifth season, which was filled with the episodes "The Gathering", "A Test of Strength," "Bound for Rescue" and "A Necessary Bond."
In November 2016, one month before the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Pablo Hidalgo revealed via Cinemablend that the planned spin-off was the last Star Wars project which George Lucas worked on before selling Lucasfilm Ltd. to The Walt Disney Company in 2012.
