The animated television show Star Wars: The Clone Wars aired its fifth season beginning on September 29, 2012. The development of this season was initially verified in December 2011. Season Five, in contrast to the show's initial four seasons, which were broadcast on Friday evenings during primetime at 9:00 p.m. ET, was shown on Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m. ET. Season Five also differed from earlier seasons in that it only had twenty episodes. It was the last season of the program to be shown on Cartoon Network.
Hasbro implied that Season Five would be the conclusion of The Clone Wars prior to its broadcast. Dave Filoni, the supervising director, refuted this assertion at the time, and in Star Wars Insider 137, he restated his intention to continue producing the series as long as viewers continued to tune in. He also revealed that his team had started creating designs and scripts for a sixth season. However, the show was canceled following Season Five, and thirteen unfinished episodes were eventually released as The Lost Missions on March 7, 2014.
Cartoon Network edited the scene in the fourteenth episode, "Eminence," where Savage Opress beheads a number of Black Sun leaders. The uncut version of the scene, however, was verified to be available on the series' Blu-ray edition. A scene from "Shades of Reason" was also censored, specifically the part where Darth Maul decapitates Pre Vizsla, and his head descends the steps of the Sundari Royal Palace throne room.

The "younglings arc" (specifically, "The Gathering," "A Test of Strength," "Bound for Rescue" and "A Necessary Bond") was once considered as a possible pilot for a potential spin-off series. According to this plan, "A War on Two Fronts" was supposed to be the Season Five premiere, but it was eventually changed to "Revival," and "A War on Two Fronts" became the season's second episode.
Star Wars Insider 137 also listed the episodes up to episode fifteen, following the episode order that was published in Insider 134:
Following the publication of Star Wars Insider 137, a revised broadcast schedule was made available, beginning with the sixth episode, "The Gathering." Pablo Hidalgo used the official Star Wars blog to verify the inconsistencies in the release order. Furthermore, the episodes "An Old Friend," "The Rise of Clovis," and "Crisis at the Heart" were moved to the show's sixth season.
