During the class's first training exercise at the Well, Wheeler was one of the top three performers, along with fellow cadets de Grom and Kell. As top finishers, the cadets were each reward with an extra dessert ration and a free period.
Wheeler first appeared in the 2015 junior novel Servants of the Empire: Rebel in the Ranks, written by Jason Fry. The character's name was inspired by Zack Wheeler, a Major League Baseball pitcher for the New York Mets.
