Storyline Summary

Discovering a Birthday Present

Teebo is experimenting with a magical concoction in Master Logray's dwelling at Bright Tree Village, which results in a chaotic scene, much to the irritation of Wicket, Kneesaa, and Latara. Teebo then reveals that he was assisting Wicket in finding an appropriate birthday gift for his mother, Shodu. Subsequently, a mask lands on Teebo's head.

Wicket is growing increasingly annoyed that he can't locate a suitable gift for his mother's birthday celebration, which is scheduled for this evening. However, he stumbles upon a map that indicates the location of an ancient temple constructed by a long-lost civilization. Latara initially finds this uninteresting until Wicket mentions that the temple was once used to safeguard valuable jewels. Latara immediately inquires about when they will depart. Wicket suggests leaving immediately, but Kneesaa cautions that the map includes a warning for Ewoks to "keep out or face dire consequences." Wicket confidently asserts that the four of them are capable of handling any situation, emphasizing that they are courageous Ewoks, not a group of fearful, elderly Duloks.

In the meantime, at the Duloks' swamp residence, an irate Queen Urgah is throwing a fit, flinging various items at her spouse, King Gorneesh. She demands that Gorneesh not return until he has acquired an acceptable anniversary present. Gorneesh then commands his subordinates, including Umwak, to find a fitting anniversary gift for his wife.

The Forgotten Temple

The Ewoks eventually arrive at the Lost Temple. While Wicket and the others display enthusiasm, Latara expresses her reluctance to enter the filthy temple. Wicket entices her with the promise of a treasure-filled chamber, and she takes the lead. Kneesaa cautions her about potential traps, but she disregards the warning and touches a red gem located at the base of an idol, which activates a hidden trapdoor. The Ewoks find themselves sliding down a spiral chute, narrowly avoiding being impaled by sharp spikes. Kneesa utilizes her lasso to rescue them from a lava pit, pulling them to safety.

The Ewoks quickly discover themselves within the treasure vault, which is brimming with gems. Latara celebrates their discovery, while Teebo confirms the accuracy of the map. Wicket retrieves a green jewel. Kneesaa suggests that they should depart due to the unsettling atmosphere. While Kneesaa helps herself to several diamonds, the Ewoks are confronted by a sizable dragon-like creature, which protests their intrusion. Wicket leads the Ewoks into a tunnel, but the dragon relentlessly pursues them through the temple.

The Ewoks also evade a series of falling logs, but the dragon continues its pursuit. The Ewoks narrowly escape being crushed by the logs by fleeing through a closing gate. Wicket also manages to grab a green gem. The Ewoks are relieved to have escaped, and Wicket is overjoyed to have obtained a green gem, hoping to present it to his mother as a gift. However, the Duloks are observing them from the bushes, deciding that the gem would make an ideal gift for Queen Urgah. One of the Duloks attempts to capture them with a net but inadvertently traps his own companions, including Umwak. Unwak complains that they will now be forced to go to the Ewok village.

Problematic gifts

Later in the evening, the Ewoks are hosting a celebration at Bright Tree Village. Malani presents Shodu with her first self-made birthday cake. Wicket gives his mother the green gem. When Shodu asks about the gem's origin, Wicket claims to have simply found it lying around. While Wicket is dancing with his mother, Kneesaa is impressed that Shodu adores her gift. Latara then reveals that she has acquired a gift for herself. However, the jewel begins to hatch, releasing a baby serpent that resembles the dragon they encountered at the Lost Temple. The Ewoks quickly realize that the jewels are actually serpent eggs.

Kneesaa determines that they must warn Wicket and sends Teebo to take her place dancing with Shodu. Kneesaa informs Wicket that they need to retrieve Shodu's gem and alerts him to the serpentine hatchling, which is running around Latara. Wicket is unsure how he will break the news to his mother. Wicket later speaks with his mother in private.

Dulok Complications

However, Umwak and his crew capture the two in a net. The Duloks transport the two Ewok captives and the green gem back to the Dulok village in the swamps. Umwak presents Queen Urgah with the gem, as well as Wicket and Shodu as an added bonus. Wicket persuades his hesitant mother to give the gem to Urgah, assuring her that he doesn't mind. Gorneesh forces Shodu to bow before him. Wicket attempts to defend his mother but is knocked to the ground by the Duloks.

Shodu declares that nobody harms her son and proceeds to knock out two of the Dulok guards. She confronts the Dulok king and queen, but his guards block her path with their spears. Gorneesh inquires about the punishment they should inflict upon the Ewoks. Before she can decide, the gem hatches, releasing a blue serpent that distresses Urgah. She angrily shoves her husband into his minions. Shodu and her son make their escape while Urgah confronts Gorneesh about his unsatisfactory present. Gorneesh deflects the blame onto Umwak.

As they walk home, Shodu asks Wicket about the origin of her birthday present. Wicket replies that it's a long and uninteresting story. She challenges him to bore her with it. Wicket then recounts his adventures at the Lost Temple. Shodu tells her son that his presence at the birthday party is the only gift she desires. Mother and son embrace. When Wicket asks if she can demonstrate the impressive flip she used on King Gorneesh, she warns him not to break the rules again. Wicket chuckles in response.
