Agave-class picket ship
The Agave-class picket ship functioned as a tactical and operational reconnaissance vessel. It was a product of the New Republic's New Class Modernization Program. These ships were deployed by task force commanders ahead of the main battle force, serving either as covert scouts or engaging in reconnaissance in force. They were assigned to the New Republic Fifth Battle Group.
Characteristics
Picket ships of the Agave-class were outfitted with Class 1 hyperdrives, advanced sensor arrays, a sophisticated stealth system, and hypertransceivers with a "shotgun" configuration. This allowed them to transmit intelligence back to the main battlegroup while minimizing the possibility of detection. Reportedly, some were also equipped with interdiction field generators, as demonstrated by the fleet pursuing the Teljkon Vagabond. If detected, an Agave-class ship could rapidly escape into the safety of hyperspace. The sublight engines of the Agave-class picket ships offered a moderate speed profile, yet were sufficient to contend with enemy patrols.
In line with the New Class program's emphasis on efficiency, the fundamental hull design and core systems of the Agave-class were also adapted for use in the Warrior-class.
Behind the scenes
The sole official depiction of the Agave-class picket ship can be found within the RPG sourcebook titled Cracken's Threat Dossier. Similar to images of other New Class vessels, this particular image contradicts details presented in the Black Fleet Crisis novels, which Cracken's Threat Dossier draws upon. The Warrior-class and the Agave-class bear little resemblance to one another, despite the claim that they share a common hull.
