Artt Butler began his career in the voice-over field back in 1991. He served as the primary booth director for a talent agency, where he coached and guided voice actors during recording sessions. In 2011, Butler saw a casting call from Star Wars: The Clone Wars director Dave Filoni and decided to audition to play the Mon Calamari Captain Ackbar in the animated series. During his audition, Butler emulated Ackbar's voice from Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi (1983), unlike most other auditionees who used their natural speaking voices. He secured the role and appeared in the initial three episodes of the fourth season of the show: "Water War," "Gungan Attack," and "Prisoners." Eric Geller from TheForce.net commented in his review of "Water War" that Butler's vocal performance was a "great match" to Ackbar's voice in Return of the Jedi.
