The well-known assassin droid, IG-88
War droids, more commonly known as assassin droids, represented a specific type of droid engineered with the singular goal of assassination. These droids operated with independent programming, not beholden to any single master, although they could be programmed to serve one or more individuals. Examples of assassin droids, such as the IG-RM bodyguard and enforcer droids and the HK-87 assassin droids, also functioned as bodyguards and enforcers for those they served.

A model of assassin droid, the SD-K4 assassin droid, was produced by Baktoid Combat Automata during the Clone Wars and saw use by the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Subsequently, the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance both utilized this model.
Holowan Laboratories manufactured a type of assassin droid referred to as the IG-86 sentinel droid, which were employed by criminal organizations as enforcers. Other assassin droids included the BT-1 assassin droids and 0-0-0, both created by the Galactic Empire's Tarkin Initiative, as well as the droid bounty hunters IG-88, IG-90, and IG-11. The Imperial Security Bureau and Imperial Army Intelligence made use of the E522 assassin droid for covert operations. Later, the Rebel Alliance's Intelligence also adopted this droid.
