Aves

Aves was a Human of the male gender, according to legends, and he held the position of chief aide and communications expert for Talon Karrde, who was a well-known smuggler. Aves had been working alongside Karrde since the very start of his organization, and as such, he often acted as Karrde's representative when dealing with figures like Han Solo and the pilots of Rogue Squadron.

Biography

Aves.

Aves was in his early middle age when he became part of Karrde's crew, which occurred soon after Jabba Desilijic Tiure's demise in 4 ABY. From the very beginning of Karrde's takeover of the Car'das Smuggling Syndicate, Aves maintained a close relationship with the smuggling leader, functioning as both his personal aide and trusted advisor. Officially, Aves' role was to coordinate field operatives and manage dispatches for the smuggling operation.

During the events of the Thrawn Crisis in 9 ABY, Aves remained in close proximity to the smuggler chief. When Grand Admiral Thrawn made his way to Myrkr in search of ysalamiri, Aves took on the role of the organization's communications officer, rapidly conveying information about the Grand Admiral and his flagship, the Chimaera, directly to Karrde.

Following the Grand Admiral's departure from Myrkr, Aves took the controls of the Wild Karrde for a routine mission. While on board, Mara Jade sensed a disturbance through the Force, prompting Karrde to instruct Aves to alter their course. Mara's intuition led the Wild Karrde to intercept Luke Skywalker's incapacitated x-wing. The Wild Karrde's comms officer (a female) negotiated the price for rescuing Luke, and Aves himself greeted Luke as he disembarked. After introducing Luke to Captain Talon Karrde, Karrde and Luke engaged in a brief discussion about Luke's connection with Mara. Finding nothing of particular interest, Karrde offered an apology to Luke and signaled for his capture. Utilizing the Force-dampening field produced by the onboard ysalamiri, Aves successfully subdued Luke Skywalker using a stun baton.

Upon their return to the Myrkr base, while Mara Jade and Talon Karrde debated the fate of their guest, Aves received a request for landing clearance from Fynn Torve, an operative who was returning. Torve's message indicated that he was accompanied by Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, who were following a lead on potential allies. Karrde instructed Mara to conceal Luke within the base while he met with Han and Lando for a meal. During the dinner, Aves received an unexpected communication from Grand Admiral Thrawn, who was aboard the Chimaera and already in orbit near the Myrkr base. As Karrde skillfully navigated the situation, keeping each party unaware of the others' presence within the smuggling hideout, Luke managed to escape the base and flee into the surrounding forest. Sensing impending trouble, Mara pursued Luke into the forest using a speeder. In a reciprocal gesture, Grand Admiral Thrawn offered Karrde the assistance of stormtrooper search parties to recover the stolen speeder and apprehend the suspected associates. In a race against time, Aves collaborated with Han Solo and Lando Calrissian to locate and rescue Mara and Luke from Hyllard City before the Empire could.

Following the Battle of Sulis Van, Aves piloted the Wild Karrde on what would be its final journey from the Myrkr base. While Karrde took one last look at the forest planet, Aves concealed the ship behind an asteroid in orbit. Unbeknownst to Karrde and Aves, Grand Admiral Thrawn had anticipated Talon Karrde's sentimental farewell and was preparing to ambush the smuggler as he departed. Aves argued with Mara as she seized control of the ship and initiated a jump to hyperspace, effectively saving them from the ambush. This incident caused Aves to question Mara's loyalty to Karrde, which later led to Aves lying in wait to confront Mara after her apparent betrayal and Karrde's capture by the Empire. Mara convinced Aves that she had been deceived by Grand Admiral Thrawn and that she intended to prove her loyalty by rescuing Karrde from imprisonment aboard the Chimaera. Aves arranged to provide her with a skipray and a ysalamiri nutrient frame for a mission to Jomark, but instead of joining the rescue mission, he chose to remain behind and complete the evacuation of the crew from the compromised base.

After the Battle for the Katana Fleet, Aves and Karrde encountered Samuel Tomas Gillespie, a long-time associate, aboard the Wild Karrde and Kern's Pride, respectively. Their pleasantries were cut short when Gillespie's freighter came under attack by pirates. Aves and Karrde maneuvered the Wild Karrde into combat to give the Kern's Pride a chance to escape. However, neither ship retreated, as both smuggling organizations revealed that they had reinforcements in nearby space, prepared for such an event. This prompted Karrde to invite Gillespie to collaborate in forming the Smugglers' Alliance, a project that Karrde, Gillespie, and Aves continued to develop and plan in the months that followed.

Karrde and Gillespie organized a gathering of prominent smugglers at the Whistler's Whirlpool Tapcafe on Trogan. Karrde extended an invitation to the assembled smuggling leaders to join the emerging Smugglers' Alliance and take action against the Empire by assisting him in uncovering the location where Grand Admiral Thrawn's clone army was being produced. The smugglers initially debated remaining neutral in the conflict, but the meeting was disrupted by an Imperial attack, resulting in the death of Lishma. The surviving leaders then agreed to unite and fight against the Empire. During these negotiations and subsequent discussions, Karrde entrusted Aves with command of the crews of the Starry Ice, the Etherway, and the Wild Karrde.

Some months after the Thrawn Crisis had subsided, Karrde granted Aves command of his own ship: the Lastri's Ort.

Personality and traits

As the main intermediary and point of contact for the crew, Aves often found himself the recipient of confidences from crew members who were hesitant to speak directly to Karrde. In turn, Aves would provide Karrde with insights into the mood and morale of his employees. Aves would voice concerns on behalf of the crew — without revealing specific names — to Karrde, confident that Karrde would not use the information against them.

Aves was known for his loyalty and trustworthiness. He was not afraid to challenge orders or question the validity of a plan, but he would typically carry out the order regardless of the response. Aves prioritized the safety of his crew and the well-being of the organization above all else, and he was always prepared to draw his blaster on anyone he suspected of posing a threat.

When the Wild Karrde intercepted Luke Skywalker's disabled X-Wing in space, it was Aves who stepped in to interfere and subdue the Jedi Master. When Mara and Luke were in danger of being captured by Grand Admiral Thrawn's stormtrooper search party, Aves led Lando and Han on the rescue mission. When Lando attempted to subdue Aves, stalling for Luke to use the Force on a stone archway, Aves drew his blaster on him, suspecting him of cowardice and jeopardizing the rescue attempt. After Mara's suspected betrayal and Karrde's arrest, Aves took the lead in moving the remaining crew to safety and confronted Mara at blaster-point. Aves also acted swiftly to rescue Samuel Tomas Gillespie from pirates attacking the Kern's Pride, and he was among the first to draw his blaster during the ambush on Togran.

Powers and abilities

Aves was a skilled navigator and freighter pilot, often entrusted with the command of multiple ships within Karrde's fleet. He was eventually given his own command, the Lastri's Ort, which was the largest warship in Karrde's organization.

Aves was also streetwise and fluent in both Basic and Huttese. He possessed a wealth of knowledge about planetary systems, gambling, and bargaining.

Behind the scenes

Aves made his initial appearance in Legends as a communications officer stationed at Talon Karrde's Myrkr base, in Heir to the Empire. The Heir to the Empire Sourcebook describes him as "having served with Karrde since the early days of his operation."

In February 2001, authors Tish Eggleston Pahl and Chris Cassidy retroactively portrayed Aves as "the new hire" to Karrde's organization in their short story, A Credit for Your Thoughts, which was published in Star Wars Gamer 2.
