Azure Angel

The Azure Angel represented a uniquely modified Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor starfighter. This craft was extensively customized and flown by Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker during the opening period of the Clone Wars.

Characteristics

Despite Anakin Skywalker's role as a Jedi General commanding armies during the Clone Wars, he retained the spirit of the young boy who salvaged, rebuilt, and raced a Podracer to victory. Although the Azure Angel started as a standard Delta-7, Anakin, possessing a natural talent for mechanics and unsatisfied with the Delta-7's base capabilities, implemented significant mechanical and aerodynamic alterations. These changes were intended to elevate the starfighter's overall performance, aligning it with his personal preferences for speed and handling during flight and combat situations. Anakin painted his ship in colors reminiscent of his old podracer, modeling it after his ideal speeder design. This same color scheme would later be used on the Blade of Dorin, a gift from Anakin to Jedi Master Plo Koon during the Malevolence crisis. The name Azure Angel stemmed from Anakin's affection for his secretly wedded wife, Galactic Republic Senator Padmé Amidala.

To amplify its destructive capabilities, he equipped it with four Taim & Bak laser cannons, positioning two on each wingtip, alongside a centrally mounted missile launcher with a substantial missile payload. The laser cannons situated on each wingtip could be fired independently or in unison, capable of engaging targets at extreme off-axis angles, even as Anakin flew past them.

The missiles could be deployed in quick succession; seven were launched within mere seconds during the Battle of Muunilinst. Further enhancements included amplified engine power, adjustable stabilizer foils, and vectored thrusters to improve maneuverability in realspace and within atmospheres. It also featured a pair of TransGalMeg hyperdrive thrusters, granting hyperspace travel without the need for a hyperdrive ring.

History

Some Jedi expressed concern that Skywalker viewed this fighter as a personal belonging, indicating a difficulty in detaching from his past and resisting attachments. However, Jedi Master Saesee Tiin encouraged him to continue pushing the ship's boundaries, hoping that Anakin's improvements would influence the design of future Jedi starfighters.

The original Azure Angel remained in service until the Battle of Muunilinst. After eliminating numerous Geonosian fighters and a Separatist gun platform, Anakin encountered Asajj Ventress, who engaged him in combat using her Ginivex-class starfighter. Upon the Dark Jedi's retreat, Anakin pursued her to the jungle moon of Yavin 4, where she destroyed the Azure Angel after he had landed. Subsequently, Skywalker piloted various other starfighters, including several yellow Delta-7B's, a red Delta-7, another blue Delta-7 named Azure Angel II, and at least two yellow Eta-2 Actis craft.

Behind the scenes

  • The name Azure Angel originated from Lucasfilm 's "Holocron Keeper," Leland Chee , drawing inspiration from the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels precision flight demonstration team. Alternative names considered included Cerulean Angel , Cobalt Angel , and Teal Angel .
  • A LEGO rendition of the fighter (LEGO STAR WARS - 75087 Anakin's Custom Jedi Starfighter) was launched in 2015.
