Bail Antilles (The Star Wars)

Bail Antilles was a merchant who operated across the galaxy and was allied with Clieg Whitsun, an Aquillian Ranger. He was depicted as a robust individual, adorned with furs and golden jewelry.

Behind the scenes

The designation "Bail Antilles" initially surfaced in May of 1974, within the 132-page early version of the movie that would eventually become Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. A year afterward, in Adventures of the Starkiller, Episode I: The Star Wars, Antilles himself became an Aquillian Ranger and served as the co-pilot alongside the story's central figure, Luke Starkiller. Subsequent story expansions portrayed the character as the parent of Princess Leia from the world of Ogana Major.

Following the renaming of Princess Leia's home planet to Alderaan, the name "Ogana" underwent a slight spelling alteration and was assigned to the royal lineage. Consequently, Bail Antilles was then renamed Bail Organa, and his name appeared in both the script and novelization of the original Star Wars motion picture, although within the film, he was only mentioned as Princess Leia's father. In Star Wars (1977) 2, the second installment of the film's comic book adaptation by Marvel, Leia's father was mistakenly identified as "Bail Antillies [sic], Viceroy of Alderaan." Ultimately, Bail Antilles was established as a distinct figure from Organa during the development phase of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, specifically as Organa's predecessor in the role of senator representing Alderaan.
