Bartyn Gourmet Delicacies

Bartyn Gourmet Delicacies, often abbreviated as BGD, originated as a seafood enterprise established by Hugo Bartyn, an ambitious entrepreneur. His initial strategy involved exporting foodstuffs from his holdings on Lamaredd, with the primary intention of illicitly enriching himself at the expense of the Outer Rim Oreworks Company employees, who asserted dominion over the entire planet for mining operations. The initial workforce at the BGD processing plant, consisting of fishermen and other laborers, were essentially indentured servants. However, Bartyn's descendants, who succeeded him in managing the company, eventually granted them their freedom. BGD, alongside the ORO mine, constituted the core of the planet's economy and the most significant commercial entity.

History

Lamaredd, situated within the Lamaro system in the Outer Rim Territories, possessed abundant reserves of both consumable seafood and valuable minerals. However, early surveys conducted by the Old Republic failed to identify these resources. Approximately five centuries prior to the Battle of Naboo, Hugo Bartyn, a scout employed by the Outer Rim Oreworks Company, utilized advanced technology to analyze the system and discovered both of these valuable assets. Bartyn informed ORO about the mineral deposits but concealed the existence of the sea life, intending to exploit it for personal gain without ORO's knowledge until it was too late to intervene.

ORO furnished Bartyn with droids to construct ORO Mining Station LM0228, and also registered some land in the nearby bay under Bartyn's name. Bartyn secured the droids by bribing key personnel, ensuring their availability after the construction phase. He then reprogrammed them with fishing-related software. Furthermore, Bartyn acquired a discontinued Hoersch-Kessel LH-3010 capital freighter which he repurposed to establish the core infrastructure of a coastal settlement that would become known as Bartyn's Landing. Bartyn coerced a number of amphibian aliens into serving as indentured servants, tasking them with fishing and processing the catch at the plant. He also secretly secured landing rights at strategic locations across the planet.

Subsequently, Bartyn established his own enterprise, Bartyn Gourmet Delicacies, while simultaneously working for ORO and generating substantial profits for them in record time, even while diverting a portion of the funds. He also found time for hunting expeditions. Despite the fishermen's dissatisfaction with their working conditions, the majority accepted the arrangement. Bartyn Gourmet Delicacies quickly became Hugo Bartyn's primary source of income, evolving into a prosperous venture. Seafood sourced from Lamaredd became a highly sought-after delicacy among affluent connoisseurs, Hutts, and nobles from Alderaan.

As his personal wealth increased, Bartyn granted certain freedoms to his workers and ORO, who were largely displeased with Bartyn's entrepreneurial success but agreed to tolerate it as long as the mine continued to yield sufficient profits.

Eventually, around 517 BBY, the fishermen organized themselves into the Sailor's Union and initiated an unannounced work stoppage that could have had catastrophic consequences for BGD. This was especially concerning as Bartyn was at risk of failing to fulfill orders for certain Hutt clients who, as Bartyn feared, could deploy agents to seize control of BGD. The Sailor's Union, led by captain Sirrik Olyeg, negotiated with Bartyn to secure the fishermen's status as free citizens and grant them a share of the profits derived from the sale of their catch. Ultimately, the majority of BGD's sailors joined the Sailor's Union.

Over the ensuing five centuries, Bartyn Gourmet Delicacies was inherited by Hugo Bartyn's descendants, along with his other assets and responsibilities, including the Administratorship of the ORO mines. Despite ORO's supposed control over the spaceport at Bartyn's Landing, the ORO Administrator/BGD CEO managed to control the interplanetary seafood exports, preventing any entity outside of BGD from engaging in such activities. BGD and ORO emerged as the two dominant powers on Lamaredd. Due to various irregularities surrounding their operations, including incidents of BGD vessels ramming independent trawlers like that of Howe Walwahd, they actively sought to prevent visits from external law enforcement agencies, including the Jedi Order.

Around 69 BBY, the company's interplanetary supply routes were targeted by the Dark Jedi Byrch Dyshkava. Following their hyperspace routes, Dyshkava eventually arrived on Lamaredd, where he became the leader of an outlaw gang until his capture later that year.

Around 29 BBY, BGD served as the exclusive food supplier to the Three Jetties Gourmet Restaurant in Bartyn's Landing, which was owned by Guther Bartyn, who also owned BGD at the time. That same year, the reappearance of the native sentient species of Lamaredd, the long-presumed extinct Menahuun, led to a gradual decline in power for the Bartyn family and ORO's withdrawal from the planet. Although BGD remained a profitable enterprise, Guther Bartyn was unable to maintain control of it. The town council of Bartyn's Landing assumed control of BGD, and the Sailor's Union believed that they were positioned to become the next owners.

Behind the scenes

Alternate endings

This article is predicated on the assumption that the player characters in Reckonings achieve the optimal outcome. However, in the event of their failure, the adventure offers an alternative narrative path that unfolds during an open conflict between the Menahuun and the inhabitants of Bartyn's Landing. In this scenario, Guther Bartyn retains ownership of BGD and enlists the player characters to crew a BGD sea-freighter bound for his personal summer estate on the island of Bartyn's Retreat. Upon arrival, the player characters would discover that Bartyn's Retreat had already been occupied by the Menahuun.
