Sirrik Olyeg

Sirrik Olyeg, a Chagrian female individual, made her living as a fisherperson. She captained a trawler for Bartyn Gourmet Delicacies in the locale of Lamaredd. Later, due to worsening conditions at work, she spearheaded the planet's initial syndical movement, establishing the Sailor's Union.

Biography

Sirrik Olyeg was a Chagrian woman. She belonged to the group known as the First-Wavers, the original inhabitants who were deceptively drawn to Bartyn's Landing, a newly established coastal settlement in Lamaredd. This occurred approximately five centuries prior to the Battle of Naboo. Upon arrival, these settlers, consisting of Chagrians, Iskalonians, Gungans, Mon Calamari, and Quarren, were forced into indentured servitude, essentially becoming slaves under the control of Mayor Hugo Bartyn. They were compelled to labor either at the food processing facility or on trawlers.

Olyeg possessed a family. Tragically, all of them, with the exception of herself, perished in an unprovoked assault carried out by a swoop gang composed of Quarrens. Following this loss, she dedicated herself to her profession and demonstrated exceptional skill in fishing.

Despite Bartyn's speciesist tendencies, he had to acknowledge the substantial profits his fishermen generated for his seafood enterprise, Bartyn Gourmet Delicacies. Consequently, Bartyn granted the sailors significantly more liberties and conveniences compared to the plant employees, who frequently succumbed to accidents or instances of inter-species conflict. Around 517 BBY, seventeen of the trawlers were commanded by alien captains – although this was not officially recognized. Olyeg, who was by this time an older individual, was among these captains. These alien captains established an informal communication network between vessels for the purpose of ensuring their collective safety.

Realizing the unacceptability of the conditions in Bartyn's Landing, Olyeg pioneered the subversive use of the network, initiating discussions about a revolt against Bartyn. This concept gained traction among other aliens, and even some Humans. Aware that Bartyn might have individuals monitoring the communications, Olyeg employed ocean-related metaphors to mislead them. She orchestrated a sudden cessation of work on a specific date.

When the designated day arrived, the boats vanished into the open sea, without providing any explanation. If a boat were to sink, Bartyn would be notified through technology. Given that the planet was predominantly ocean, Bartyn could not allocate his limited resources to search for the missing trawlers. However, he also could not afford to disregard the situation, as he had outstanding orders from the Hutts. Speculation spread throughout Bartyn's Landing, until the truth was uncovered. Upon learning this, the plant workers joined the strike, refusing to yield to Bartyn's threats.

Recognizing Bartyn's desperation, Olyeg formally named her movement the Sailor's Union and assumed the official role of its "first chair." She then requested a direct meeting with Bartyn to negotiate. Bartyn conceded several points to Olyeg, leading to improvements in the lives of the aliens in several ways: The cramped living space of The Ring was expanded, aliens were permitted to establish settlements on leased farms surrounding the Landing, and Bartyn relinquished control of the second largest continent on the planet, Little Mon Cal, as a homeland for the aliens. Bartyn also benefited from this negotiation, and his profits increased.

The Sailor's Union evolved into a dominant force in Lamaredd, prospering for the subsequent five centuries. Nevertheless, Bartyn instructed his subordinates to assassinate Olyeg, although he acknowledged that the situation had proven so advantageous for him that he almost regretted his decision.
