The initial generation of colonists at Bartyn's Landing were later remembered as First-Wavers, a name bestowed upon them after their passing. These pioneers faced working conditions akin to slavery under the rule of Hugo Bartyn, yet they persevered and ultimately created a better future for their offspring. Consequently, they were held in almost religious esteem within Lamaredd.
Approximately half a millennium prior to the Battle of Naboo, Hugo Bartyn, acting as a representative of the Outer Rim Oreworks corporation, laid claim to the planet Lamaredd for the purpose of resource extraction on behalf of ORO. He then assumed the role of Administrator overseeing the fully automated mining operations. Driven by personal ambitions, Bartyn established the foundation of a coastal settlement, which would later become known as Bartyn's Landing, utilizing a three-kilometer Hoersch-Kessel LH-3010 capital freighter. Bartyn's intention was to amass wealth by secretly exporting the region's seafood, bypassing ORO's knowledge.
While Bartyn equipped his droids with software related to fishing and seafood processing, he still required a workforce of biological fishermen and processing plant employees to secure the necessary catches. Through deceptive promises, his representatives recruited individuals from amphibious sentient species originating from Champala, Dac, Iskalon, and Naboo. Bartyn eliminated the identities of these newcomers, and the Chagrians, Iskalonians, Gungans, Mon Calamari, and Quarrens were informed that they were "indentured servants" or effectively slaves under Bartyn's control, toiling for Bartyn Gourmet Delicacies.
A large number of Iskalonians displayed a staunch refusal to cooperate. As a result, Hugo Bartyn abandoned these rebellious aliens on flimsy wooden rafts adrift in the open ocean, anticipating that either the elements or predatory creatures would eliminate them.
The remaining settlers established themselves in the peripheral area of Bartyn's Landing, known as The Ring, enduring the severe conditions imposed by Bartyn: limited sustenance, demanding labor, cramped living quarters, and minimal prospects for advancement. Many aliens struggled to adapt to living in a diverse, multi-cultural environment, and violent clashes between species became the most prevalent cause of mortality. Eventually, around 517 BBY, one of these aliens, Sirrik Olyeg, formed the Sailor's Union and engaged in negotiations with Bartyn, resulting in some improvements to their circumstances. Bartyn's daughter and heir, Tria Bartyn, ultimately granted all the aliens their freedom from servitude.
The descendants of these aliens would come to regard the original settlers as the "First-Wavers," venerating them as martyrs with an almost religious intensity.
In the years leading up to the Battle of Naboo, agents of the Jedi Council were dispatched to Lamaredd to investigate the origins of its diverse alien population. It was only then that individuals from outside the planet became aware of the tragic story of the First-Wavers.
