The clash at Baskarn represents a relatively insignificant engagement within the broader context of the Galactic Civil War. During a reconnaissance mission, an Imperial officer stumbled upon the concealed Rebel installation known as Advance Base Baskarn and opted for an immediate assault.
Before the conflict, Colonel Riskin dispatched a specialized team, well-versed in jungle warfare, to investigate the disappearance of a five-member scout team. The investigation revealed the original team had been killed and consumed by a large, flightless predator, and their equipment had been acquired by a Yrashu tribe known as the Low Ones. Forming an alliance with a more amicable Yrashu tribe, the jungle specialists successfully subdued the Low Ones. Impressed by the Rebels' awkwardness within the jungle environment, the Yrashu extended an invitation to learn their jungle survival techniques through a ritual called a momu, a process that spanned nearly two weeks. As dictated by Yrashu customs, the jungle team became integrated into the tribe and ventured into the jungle under the guidance of Yrashu instructors.
Through participation in the momu, the jungle team acquired the Yrashu's methods for navigating the jungle discreetly and safely. This involved minimizing clothing and equipment to avoid entanglement in the dense vegetation, mastering tree climbing techniques, including ascent of the dangerous razor trees, perfecting jungle camouflage, foraging for edible plants, evading predators like the massive hrosma tiger, and even underwater breathing facilitated by symbiotic bacteria that colonized the lungs.
Following the completion of the momu and the forging of strong bonds with the Yrashu, the Rebels returned to Advance Base Baskarn, where they had been presumed lost in action due to their two-week absence.
Upon their return, the jungle specialists were informed by Riskin and his second-in-command, Major Talsa, that an Imperial reconnaissance fleet, consisting of two Lancer-class frigates and a Star Galleon-class frigate, had emerged from hyperspace and launched an invasion.
The base's ion cannon managed to fire a few shots through the base's limited shield, but a subsequent computer malfunction caused the shield to collapse, enabling the Imperial assault. With the shield down, Rebel starfighters were deployed to resist the invasion, but Imperial landing craft had already deployed a force of sixty stormtroopers and two AT-STs approximately half a kilometer south of the Rebel base.
Recognizing the potential advantage offered by the newly acquired jungle skills of the Rebel jungle specialists, Riskin assigned them twenty regular Rebel soldiers and tasked them with intercepting the Imperial force. The Yrashu also volunteered their assistance, now considering some of the Rebels as members of their tribe. While the twenty regular soldiers proved to be more of a hindrance than a help, drawing attention with their noise, getting disoriented, and falling prey to jungle predators, the Yrashu and the jungle specialists proved highly effective.
The sixty stormtroopers advanced in two formations of thirty, flanking the AT-STs which advanced side by side in the center. Clad minimally and armed with Yrashu maces, the Yrashu-trained Rebels and the Yrashu themselves employed Yrashu jungle guerrilla tactics, targeting the stormtrooper formations, while the twenty regular soldiers were positioned to distract the Imperials. Attacking from the right, the Yrashu eliminated approximately twenty stormtroopers before being forced to take cover by AT-ST fire. The Yrashu-trained Rebels assaulted the left formation, inflicting similar casualties.
Having eliminated around forty stormtroopers, the Rebels and Yrashu lured the remaining forces towards a minefield near the Rebel base. The combination of the minefield and skillful jungle tactics resulted in the disabling of the AT-STs, allowing the regular Rebel forces to easily defeat the remaining stormtroopers.
Meanwhile, the Rebel starfighters successfully drove off the Imperial fleet during the space battle, potentially destroying the Star Galleon-class frigate.
Following the battle, the Yrashu agreed to instruct additional Rebels in their jungle survival methods, leading to the formation of a Rebel unit of jungle specialists, employing Yrashu tactics and skills, who undertook jungle missions throughout the galaxy. This group within the Rebellion was characterized by a close-knit bond and secrecy, as discussion of the momu with non-members of the Yrashu tribe was forbidden.
