The Battle of Dorin unfolded at the dawn of 21 BBY during the Clone Wars. General Grievous, representing the Confederacy of Independent Systems, initiated an attack on the Kel Dor homeworld of Dorin. This assault was a punitive measure for the planet's allegiance to the Galactic Republic. Furthermore, the Separatist invasion acted as a strategic feint, designed to divert Republic attention from the Confederacy's new droid foundry on Geonosis, a facility recently uncovered by the Republic. Despite the Kel Dors' valiant defense and initial setbacks against Grievous's battle droid forces, the arrival of a substantial Republic fleet shifted the battle's momentum. This fleet was led by Jedi Generals Plo Koon and Anakin Skywalker, Admiral Wullf Yularen, and Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano. In the ensuing naval conflict, the combined efforts of the Jedi and their clone trooper starfighter wings proved decisive, compelling the Separatist assault fleet to withdraw from Dorin. Although Grievous's remaining forces were defeated by the Republic, he managed to escape the fray aboard his personal starfighter.

As the Clone Wars entered their first year in 21 BBY, the Confederacy of Independent Systems established several battle droid production facilities on the planet of Geonosis, the location of the war's initial engagement, to bolster their Droid Army. Despite efforts to maintain secrecy from the Republic, these factories were discovered by Senator Padmé Amidala. This occurred during a retreat with Senator Rush Clovis of the InterGalactic Banking Clan at Trade Federation Senator Lott Dod's palace situated on Cato Neimoidia. Amidala successfully obtained a data disk containing tactical coordinates for the main droid foundry and relayed this information to the Jedi High Council. The Council subsequently planned an invasion of Geonosis to dismantle the factories. To draw the Jedi's attention away from Geonosis, the Confederate General Grievous devised an attack on the Republic-aligned planet Dorin, the homeworld of the Kel Dor species.
Grievous directed his forces from the bridge of his frigate, initiating an assault on Dorin with a substantial fleet consisting of two Lucrehulk-class Droid Control Ships and sixteen Munificent-class star frigates. He deployed his battle droid army to inflict damage upon the Kel Dor civilian population. Despite the Kel Dors' courageous resistance against the Separatists, they were soon overwhelmed by the support provided by Grievous's invasion fleet. During the conflict, Grievous instructed his battle droid commander to intensify the attack, aiming to punish the Kel Dors for their loyalty to the Republic. The commander responded that their BX-series droid commandos would hunt down any survivors of the initial assault. Simultaneously, the Jedi Temple received news of the invasion, and Jedi Grand Master Yoda dispatched Jedi Generals Plo Koon—himself a Kel Dor—and Anakin Skywalker, along with Skywalker's Padawan, Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano; a Jedi Knight; and Admiral Wullf Yularen to lead a Republic fleet in reinforcing Dorin. Skywalker was specifically chosen due to his exceptional starfighter piloting skills, which would be crucial in leading the task force given Dorin's location between two black holes.

Separatist intelligence intercepted information regarding the Republic task force's departure from the galactic capital of Coruscant, and Dark Acolyte Asajj Ventress conveyed this warning to Grievous. In anticipation of Skywalker's arrival, Grievous withdrew his troops from the planet's surface and deployed his droid starfighters for combat. Koon, Skywalker, Tano, Yularen, and the Jedi Knight reached Dorin with their task force of nine Venator-class Star Destroyers, including the Resolute and Unity, and engaged the Separatists in the space surrounding the planet. The Republic flotilla launched squadrons of clone trooper–piloted V-19 Torrent starfighters, with one squadron led by Skywalker and the Jedi Knight in their Delta-7B interceptors, and another unit commanded by Tano. Skywalker and Tano engaged in a friendly rivalry, comparing the number of kills achieved by their respective squadrons, competing to see which group could secure more hits.
As the Jedi and their starfighter squadrons fought the Separatists' fighter patrols of Hyena-class bombers and Vulture droid starfighters, the Republic Star Destroyers exchanged laser fire with the Separatist frigates above Dorin. However, the Separatist vessels utilized their powerful turbolaser cannons to penetrate the deflector shields of the Republic cruisers, resulting in the destruction of the Unity. With Yularen and the Resolute now under heavy fire, Skywalker directed his squadron to focus their attacks on the enemy frigate targeting the Resolute. The battle's tide soon turned in favor of the Republic as the Confederate forces began to falter. As his fleet was forced to retreat from Dorin, Grievous departed from his flotilla aboard his personal starfighter. Skywalker and the Jedi Knight immediately pursued him, abandoning their squadron, while Plo Koon led their men to target another enemy frigate. Despite the Jedi's pursuit, Grievous successfully escaped into hyperspace, leaving his remaining forces to be defeated by the Kel Dors and the Republic. By the battle's conclusion, the Jedi's squadrons had collectively achieved a significant number of enemy kills, totaling at least 131 between Skywalker's and Tano's forces.

Following their victory at Dorin, Skywalker, Tano, Yularen, and the Resolute joined the larger Republic invasion force at Geonosis, under the overall command of Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and Luminara Unduli. Skywalker and Tano briefly compared their enemy kill counts from Dorin, with Skywalker boasting his higher total of seventy-six compared to Tano's fifty-five. After a briefing with their clone commanders and the formulation of an attack plan on the Geonosian surface defenses, the Jedi launched their large-scale invasion aimed at retaking Geonosis and shutting down its droid factories. Accounts written by Jedi who participated in the Battle of Dorin, as the conflict became known, were later compiled into a collection titled the Jedi Battle Logs.
The Battle of Dorin was conceived by Series Director Dave Filoni for the 2009 second season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series, functioning as a prelude to the episode "Landing at Point Rain." It was initially presented at a script reading organized by Filoni and performed by the television series' primary voice-acting cast at the October 2009 Star Wars Fan Days III convention. The battle was first portrayed in the "Starfighter" mini-game of the 2010 Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures video game, which also introduced the name "Battle of Dorin."
