Kamino uprising

The Kaminoan rebellion, occurring in 12 BBY, unfolded on the water-covered world of Kamino. This was the planet where the Grand Army of the Republic originated during the final years of the Old Republic. After a significant period of time spent creating clone troopers for the Old Republic and later stormtroopers for the Galactic Empire under the rule of Emperor Palpatine, a faction of Kaminoans defied the Empire. They utilized their cloning capabilities to produce an army with the specific goal of opposing Palpatine's New Order. This Kaminoan resistance force revived the template of the Grand Army of the Republic, employing Jango Fett's DNA and outfitting their soldiers with phase I clone trooper armor.

Upon discovering this act of defiance, the Galactic Empire contracted the services of the well-known bounty hunter Boba Fett, himself a clone derived from Jango Fett. His mission was to infiltrate and cripple the cloning facilities located in Tipoca City. Fett's upbringing within the city provided him with detailed knowledge of the facility's internal structure, enabling him to guide the Imperial Army to a decisive victory against the "anti-clone" forces. The Kaminoan leaders met their end when their escape transports were shot down during their attempted escape. Before the battle concluded, Fett successfully retrieved a sample of Jango Fett's DNA and delivered it to his Imperial employers. As a result of this uprising, Imperial cloning strategy was overhauled, moving away from a centralized cloning model to a decentralized system with a broader range of cloning centers and genetic sources.

Prelude

In the years that followed the Empire's ascension, the planet Kamino was placed under the close supervision of Emperor Palpatine. This was done to ensure that the planet's cloning technology remained firmly under Imperial control. However, a small group of Kaminoans, specifically the Clone Masters, harbored resentment towards the Empire's presence. They covertly began developing an army of clone troopers with the intention of using them to oppose their oppressors. These renegade clone troopers were designated as clone anti-Imperial troopers due to their purpose of fighting against the Empire. They were equipped with Phase I clone trooper armor and primarily consisted of Jet Troopers and Rail ARC Commandos. The ensuing conflict pitted these Kamino-bred soldiers against their own Imperial counterparts: members of the 501st Legion of stormtroopers. They were led by the bounty hunter Boba Fett, who possessed extensive knowledge of the facility due to his upbringing on Kamino.

The battle

Imperial forces disembarked in the city using a Sentinel-class landing craft. Boba Fett, hired for his intimate understanding of the cloning facility, advanced towards it and neutralized a door control panel that had locked down the facility. He then proceeded inside, eliminating any rogue clones that stood in his path. Fett and his forces received orders to secure a Template Sample of Jango Fett's DNA to prevent the Kaminoans from producing more rogue soldiers. Upon obtaining the sample, Fett returned it to the Landing Craft, which promptly departed. The bounty hunter then re-entered the facility and destroyed the life support systems situated in the lower cloning center, effectively halting any further production of anti-Imperial clones. Simultaneously, his fellow Imperial stormtroopers engaged the enemy clones on the numerous platforms of Tipoca City.

Having completed his tasks within the cloning facilities, Fett rejoined the troopers outside and assisted them in the ongoing battle. Shortly after the clone life support was destroyed, the remaining anti-Imperial troopers were forced back onto the landing platforms and ultimately defeated. The leaders of the Kaminoan rebellion attempted to escape aboard two LAAT/is, but they were shot down by rockets fired from Imperial shock troopers and lasers from ground turrets.

Aftermath

With the rebellious clones eliminated, Kamino remained under Imperial control, and the rogue cloning facilities were seized and placed under Imperial administration. The surviving leaders of the Kaminoan resistance were apprehended and imprisoned aboard the Death Star. Many of them would later join Rebel inmates and perish during the Death Star Uprising.

Despite the decisive defeat of the clone rebellion, this event prompted Emperor Palpatine to authorize the creation of new clones from diverse templates and the recruitment of naturally born soldiers to bolster the ranks of the Stormtrooper Corps. He also took this action because he believed that the non-naturally born troopers were overly susceptible to corruption, and he theorized that a more varied group of soldiers would mitigate this issue. While the Jango Fett template would continue to be utilized, none of the Fett clones, particularly the members of the 501st who had defeated the rebel clones, would ever fully adapt to the increasing diversity within the army ranks that they had once dominated as a whole.

Behind the scenes

The Kamino uprising was first depicted in the 2005 LucasArts video game Star Wars: Battlefront II as the fourth mission within the Empire segment of the "Rise of the Empire" campaign. The event received subsequent mentions throughout the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force novel series.
