Battle of Korriban (Post–Great Hyperspace War counterinvasion)

During the Republic's counteroffensive into the Sith Worlds following the Great Hyperspace War, a conflict unfolded near Korriban. This engagement resulted in Shar Dakhan's, the then-acting Dark Lord's, forces temporarily driving the Republic Military out of the broader Horuset system.

History

After the Sith Empire suffered defeat in the Great Hyperspace War, Supreme Chancellor Pultimo of the Galactic Republic sanctioned a joint Jedi-Republic counterattack into the Stygian Caldera. The goal was to eliminate any lingering threat to the Republic's security and to liberate the Sith species from the influence of the dark side, which had plagued them for millennia. At some point after the counterattack began, surviving Sith forces under the command of Shar Dakhan, the acting Dark Lord, launched suicidal assaults against Republic forces occupying the area around Korriban, the Sith homeworld. While costly, these attacks achieved temporary success, forcing the Republic Military to withdraw from the larger Horuset system. In the brief respite that followed, Sith survivors emerged from the destroyed tombs and ruined cities where they had sought shelter.

During this period, a secluded Sith Lord known as Vitiate appeared among them. He gathered the remaining eight thousand Sith Lords and returned to his world, Nathema, to perform a ritual of Sith magic that he claimed would end the Republic's counterattack. Following the Ritual of Nathema, Vitiate reappeared on Korriban, assembled the youngest generation of Sith still present on the planet, and departed aboard an exile fleet on a Sith exodus to Dromund Kaas. The Republic eventually returned to the Horuset system sometime after the fleet's departure, reestablishing control over Korriban before the counterattack concluded.

Behind the scenes

This specific battle on Korriban was initially mentioned briefly on page 128 of The Essential Atlas as a suicide attack occurring sometime after Pultimo's counterattack on the Sith Empire began. Star Wars: The Old Republic references this attack in Codex Entry 30, titled "Rise of the Sith Emperor," where Vitiate makes his first of two appearances on Korriban during the Republic's temporary withdrawal from the Horuset system.

There is some ambiguity regarding the dating of this event. The Essential Atlas seems to place it immediately after the second battle of Korriban near the beginning of the counterattack. Codex Entry 30 appears to follow the timeline established by The Old Republic: Revan, placing the battle late in the counterattack's final stages, after famine, disease, and internal conflict had already significantly reduced the Sith population. This discrepancy could be explained by the fact that the Atlas was published several years before the events following the Great Hyperspace War were fully established and solidified by supplementary The Old Republic material.
