Battle of Orinda (13 ABY)

During the Galactic Civil War, a significant confrontation, known as the fourth battle of Orinda, unfolded. This clash pitted the Imperial Remnant against the Restored Empire, a faction of Imperial hardliners. The central objective was to seize control of Orinda, the Imperial capital, thereby securing dominance over the Remnant.

Background

In the year 13 ABY, Feena D'Asta represented the Imperial Remnant in discussions with the New Republic. These talks were interruped by an attack from stormtroopers serving the Restored Empire, resulting in D'Asta's death. Admiral Gilad Pellaeon, deeply affected by D'Asta's demise and suspecting betrayal by the New Republic, retaliated by ordering the Imperial Navy to strike at the Republic, leaving the Imperial capital Orinda vulnerable. Exploiting this situation, Warlord Ennix Devian plotted to assault the planet, with the aim of eliminating Pellaeon and claiming the title of Supreme Commander of the Empire.

Concurrently, Kir Kanos was reintroduced to Baron Ragez D'Asta and Feena D'Asta's clone. The baron's strategy involved positioning his fleet behind Orinda's moons, awaiting the anticipated hardliner attack. Additionally, he intended to deceive Devian by presenting him with Feena's clone, suggesting that she had survived the assassination "attempt".

The battle

Admiral Pellaeon surrenders.

The fleet of the Restored Empire made its entrance into the Orinda system and launched an assault on the planet. This formidable, albeit outdated, fleet efficiently decimated the limited defense forces, paving the way for Devian's ground troops to land. Devian, accompanied by his stormtroopers, stormed the Imperial headquarters, overcoming the remaining resistance. Zam Basdor revealed his betrayal, but Admiral Pellaeon personally executed him with a shot to the head. As Pellaeon and his remaining soldiers were preparing to surrender, Kanos, Mirith Sinn, Feena's clone, and her "father" arrived at the base.

The unveiling of Feena's clone to Devian, coupled with the activation of the concealed D'Astan fleet within the system, triggered a fierce exchange of fire. This resulted in the deaths of General Vota and a significant portion of Devian's stormtrooper forces.

Kir Kanos kills Devian.

Kanos gave chase to Devian, who was attempting to escape in his shuttle. Kanos declared his intention to permanently dismantle the hardliner movement. During their duel, Kanos managed to disable Devian's weapon; however, Devian ultimately gained the advantage, shattering Kanos's weapon and impaling him in the chest with his vibro-blade. Despite his critical injuries, Kanos summoned his remaining strength to overpower Devian, fatally impaling him through the left shoulder and effectively ending the hardliner conspiracy.

Aftermath

Although Devian's attack had left Kanos in critical condition, he survived long enough for Mirith Sinn to evacuate him to a secure location owned by Baron D'Asta within the D'Astan sector. Believing Kanos was on the verge of death, Sinn bid him farewell and returned to the galactic capital. There, she addressed Leia Organa Solo, the Chief of State, requesting a posthumous pardon for Kanos regarding his alleged crimes against the New Republic. Unbeknownst to her, Kanos had been saved by D'Asta and his daughter, and he spent several months recuperating under their care.
