Battle of Solem

The conflict on Solem represents an engagement that occurred during the era of the Galactic Civil War.

Background

Following the Battle of Yavin, the Galactic Empire chose to commence significant offensives on numerous planets. This was intended as a display of power and to eliminate any potential Rebel presences. Governor Malvander Bren, who held authority over the Imperial outpost-world of Solem, aimed to secure favor with his Imperial superiors. His strategy involved eradicating the Rebel presence on his world through "scorched earth" methods. The purges he initiated resulted in a severe cost: approximately ten innocent civilians perished for each Rebel eliminated.

The battle

An Imperial skim fighter is downed.

Despite being at a disadvantage in terms of weaponry, the Solem resistance fighters demonstrated fierce resistance. They were motivated by their leader, the poet Yolan Bren. During the purges, Bren sustained injuries and was secretly transported to the Imperial stronghold of G'ai Solem. There, inhabitants sympathetic to the Rebel cause arranged a concealed hiding place for him and his troops while he underwent surgery. Simultaneously, the bounty hunter Boba Fett relentlessly pursued Yolan, having been contracted by Malvander to resolve the conflict by capturing the Rebel leader. Fett located Yolan, killed several of his men and compelled him to surrender to protect the remaining troops. Due to the ongoing purges, Malvander's palace had limited protection. As Fett was delivering the Rebel leader, Yolan's forces stormed the palace, fought their way into the reception hall, and successfully captured the governor.

Aftermath

Having fulfilled his assignment, and initially being deprived of the majority of his compensation due to Malvander's excessive expenditure on war resources, Fett disregarded the governor's appeals to prevent the Rebels from taking him into custody. With the governor now a prisoner, the Battle of Solem had effectively concluded. Instead of facing immediate execution, Yolan forced his brother to experience life in the same conditions of poverty and suffering that his people had been subjected to. It remains uncertain whether he gained any insight from this experience. However, it had been agreed that if he did not change, the Rebels would be permitted to execute him.
