The battlesphere represented a modified version of the core ship, originally produced by the Trade Federation. Subsequently, the Confederacy of Independent Systems utilized it during the period of the Clone Wars. Driven by multiple reactors, battlespheres included a deflector shield generator for protection. Furthermore, they contained multiple hangar bays, capable of housing a minimum of three Vulture-class droid starfighters and at least three Rogue-class Porax-38 starfighters. Functioning as a Separatist listening post, Skytop Station was a battlesphere that had been altered and positioned within the upper atmosphere of Ruusan 2; it met its end when it was destroyed by a team from the Galactic Republic.
The initial glimpse of battlespheres occurred in "Ambush," which served as the debut episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars' first season in animated television format, broadcast on October 3, 2008, although only within the introductory newsreel. Their full introduction, coupled with the revelation of their designation, transpired in "Duel of the Droids," the seventh episode of the first season, which was broadcast on November 14 of the same year.
