The Making Of
The creation of BDX droids involved cutting-edge technological advancements from Disney Research along with the Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development departments. This collaborative effort allowed the mechanical characters, such as these droids, to "interact" with guests visiting the park. Disney Imagineers publicly unveiled the BDX droids during a live demonstration in October of 2023. This demonstration showcased three "droids-in-training" as they explored the Disneyland Park section of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge as a "play test". During this test, the droids demonstrated their capability to traverse irregular surfaces and even perform dance movements, all while maintaining their stability. At the time, it remained uncertain whether the BDX droids would become a permanent fixture of Galaxy's Edge. On April 5, 2024, it was officially announced that the droids would be showcased for a limited duration during the Season of the Force event.
Throughout the development phase, the three BDX units were humorously given the names of the Disney triplets Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Following the October play test, Lucasfilm Story Group member Matt Martin stated that he could not yet disclose the droids' official names due to their ongoing development. However, he did acknowledge the internal joke involving the names Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Martin also indicated that his involvement in the development of the props was minimal, instead attributing their creation to the expertise of the Imagineers. With the announcement of their inclusion in Season of the Force, the droids were officially identified within the Star Wars universe as BDX droids.
