Bearus

Bearus was a humanoid male who held the position of chairman within the Carbonite Guild of the Empress Teta system. He oversaw the carbonite smelter that orbited Empress Teta, where he managed the yearly progress tours conducted by Lord and Lady Keto, the rulers of the Tetan planets. His final inspection occurred in 3997 BBY, when the Keto children, Aleema and Satal, arrived at the station to initiate their political takeover of the Empress Teta system under the pretense of their new Sith cult, known as the Krath. All Tetan officials present were killed, including Bearus, who was first incapacitated by the Krath's Sith magic before being forced into a vat of molten carbonite.

Biography

Mining executive

Empress Teta's orbiting carbonite smelter, where Bearus worked

A humanoid male politician from the Empress Teta star system, Bearus secured a role within the system's Carbonite Guild, a powerful mining organization that collaborated closely with the Tetan Monarchy. He eventually ascended to the position of guild chairman, and during his tenure, the guild experienced significant success in producing carbonite, a mined ore crucial for manufacturing starship components, especially hyperdrive engines. By 3997 BBY, under Bearus's leadership, the guild's profit margin had increased by fifteen percent, significantly boosting the already prosperous Tetan economy.

Bearus's base of operations was a carbonite smelter space station that orbited the system's capital planet, Empress Teta. The Tetan worlds' Emperor and Empress, Lord Keto and his sister Magda, annually inspected Bearus's smelter station and its production progress. During the 3997 BBY inspection, the Ketos arrived as scheduled, and Bearus escorted them through the facility. During the tour, Bearus learned that the Keto children, Aleema and her cousin Satal, were coming to the station. Initially, the chairman hesitated to grant them entry, knowing it violated protocol and that only authorized officials could attend such important state matters. However, he allowed them to board, believing their arrival wouldn't disrupt Lord Keto's inspection.

Krath takeover

Bearus, confounded by the Krath's Sith powers

Lord Keto was pleased with Bearus's efforts to improve carbonite production, noting that the station's increased revenue directly enhanced the Tetan system's overall wealth and influence. However, upon learning of Bearus's decision to allow Aleema and Satal on board the smelter, Lord Keto reprimanded the guild chairman for his insubordination. Bearus offered to send the children away, but Lord Keto relented and instead blamed their royal tutor for the mistake. Aleema and Satal then arrived, declaring themselves and their new Krath Sith cult as the new governing body of the Empress Teta system, and proceeded to subdue the Tetan officials present. Lord Keto ordered Bearus to summon the authorities and have Aleema and Satal arrested, but when the chairman reached for a comlink, Aleema used Sith magic to transform it into a monster, which then attacked Bearus.

As the Krath's violent coup unfolded, Bearus was among the Tetan officials, including Lord and Lady Keto, who were ordered by Aleema and Satal into the adjacent carbonite smelting chamber. Once inside, each was forced into a vat of molten carbonite, resulting in their deaths. Bearus suffered the same fate, dying quickly at the hands of the Krath usurpers.

Personality and traits

Bearus was an accomplished politician and business executive, demonstrated by his successful operation of the Carbonite Guild and the orbiting smelter. His administrative skills and leadership were crucial to the success of Tetan carbonite production, as Lord Keto noted favorably. Bearus appeared humble in the Emperor's presence, attributing the station's success to supply and demand rather than his management skills. Nonetheless, he was proud of his accomplishments. Although an obedient member of Keto's bureaucracy, Bearus defied policy by allowing Aleema and Satal to board his carbonite facility. This insubordination ultimately led to his death and the deaths of all present.

Behind the scenes

Bearus debuted in the first installment of the Tales of the Jedi Dark Lords of the Sith story arc, Masters and Students of the Force, authored by Tom Veitch and Kevin J. Anderson. He also appears in the Dark Lords of the Sith audio drama, written by John Whitman based on Veitch and Anderson's script.
