Belbullab-22 heavy starfighter

The Belbullab-22 heavy starfighter represented a single-pilot heavy starfighter design. Feethan Ottraw Scalable Assemblies was the manufacturer. During the Clone Wars, this fighter served as the heaviest in the Confederacy of Independent Systems naval forces against the Galactic Republic. Uniquely, it was the only fighter requiring a pilot. A customized Belbullab-22, known as the Soulless One, was flown by General Grievous.

The Belbullab-22 heavy starfighter, costing 168,000 credits, was manufactured by Feethan Ottraw Scalable Assemblies, situated on Utapau. It served within the naval forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars in their conflict with the Galactic Republic. As the Confederacy's heaviest fighter, it was a rare example of a crewed fighter, intended to bridge the gap in heavy attack capabilities between the Vulture-class droid starfighter and the Hyena-class Droid Bomber.

Rather than a typical starfighter design, the Belbullab-22's construction more closely resembled that of a landspeeder or groundcar, relying on powerful engines and high speeds for flight. Its design featured twin booms, with a central fuselage running lengthwise between two smaller nacelles. The main fuselage housed the cockpit, avionics, shield generators, a Class 6 hyperdrive generator, and the main engines. The spar-mounted nacelles on either side contained weapon systems, auxiliary thrusters, and repulsorlift systems. Furthermore, the starfighter incorporated an autopilot system, a backup Class 15 hyperdrive, short-range sensors, and a [navigation computer](/article/navigation_computer]. While the cockpit was compact, it could be customized at the factory to suit almost any pilot's physical build.

The Belbullab-22 shared a similar role and armament with the Republic Navy's Aggressive ReConnaissance-170 starfighter. Although relatively slow, it was an exceptionally resilient vessel. Its [armor](/article/armor] rivaled that of some smaller gunboats, while its robust hull and potent shields allowed it to withstand damage that would obliterate smaller craft. A pair of triple light laser cannons, housed in retractable pods, comprised its armament. Despite lacking ordnance, its cannons proved more than capable for engaging enemy fighters and even light capital ships.

As automated Separatist forces proved unsuccessful during the Clone Wars, it was the only Separatist fighter built for a single organic pilot, paving the path for future fighter production during the Imperial era.

Behind the scenes

The heavy starfighter Belbullab-22 made its debut in the 2005 prequel trilogy movie Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Later, it was identified in Collapse of the Republic, a 2019 supplement for the Star Wars Roleplaying series by Fantasy Flight Games.
