Belsavis prison

The extensive Republic prison installation known as Belsavis prison was situated on the planet of Belsavis. Constructed prior to the Great Galactic War with the Sith Empire, the facility was erected atop and encompassing a network of ancient structures created by the Rakatan Infinite Empire before the Republic's rise. It fulfilled a dual purpose: confining the Republic's most dangerous and powerful criminals, and investigating and containing the horrors found within the Rakata's abandoned structures.

Description

Located within the Outer Rim Territories, the Belsavis prison was a sprawling detention facility on the planet Belsavis. Officially, the prison comprised three distinct sections: the Minimum Security Section, the High Security Section, and the Maximum Security Section. An unofficial fourth area, the Rakatan complex nicknamed the Tomb, remained largely unexplored and separate from the Republic's infrastructure. However, there existed a fifth district: Section X, the original location upon which the prison was initially established.

Section X

The initial Republic attempt to construct the prison took place in Section X.

Minimum Security Section

The Minimum Security Section, situated within one of Belsavis's tropical rifts, housed the prison's primary administrative functions. While considered escape-proof by conventional prison standards, it represented the lowest acceptable security level for inmates within the Belsavis system. This section primarily held pirates, murderers, gangsters, and other violent humanoid criminals who were willing to engage with prison authorities; inmates requiring specialized accommodations were transferred to other sections. The rift containing the section was fortified by towering walls several meters thick, with numerous subterranean cell blocks scattered throughout. Aphor trees were a common feature, particularly in the Aphor Grove, where the Imperial Military transformed the remnants of an early Republic explorer camp into a fortified base.

The Minimum Security Section offered two main access points to the High Security Station to the west: HiSec Prison Access, a canyon connecting the northern regions of both districts, and HiSec Facilities Access to the south, providing entry to the prison's maintenance facilities located in the southern portion of the High Security Section. The Primary Thoroughfare bisected the section, with various roads branching off to connect different areas of the prison. Situated in the northeastern corner was the Prison Administration Center, heavily defended by numerous systems, turrets, and walls protecting access to the subterranean Administration Center Command. Near the Administration Center, the Inmate Recreation Zone allowed prisoners to participate in agricultural work and other activities.

The Prisoner Intake facility and Detainee Processing Center were positioned along the eastern cliffs. The section itself was further divided into various yards, including the Terrorist Detention Sector, Mercenary Containment Cells, Carbonite Prisoner Storage, and Larcenous Prisoner Holding, where Minimum Security prisoners were categorized based on their reputation, status, and capabilities. Varactyl Vale, a large open valley on the western side of Minimum Security, was named for the numerous varactyl creatures inhabiting the area. Vault K-23, a Rakata vault, was located nearby, along with Republic Guardposts Alpha and Beta, which oversaw the path to the generators powering Minimum Security built into the western cliffs. A second Rakatan vault, Vault K-66, was situated in the district's southern end.

High Security Section

The High Security Section of Belsavis prison housed both cell blocks and the complex's medical, scientific, and engineering departments. The production of water, foodstuffs, electricity, and other essentials occurred within this section. Moreover, the science and medical teams stationed here were responsible for creating and maintaining methods to manage the complex's more dangerous and unique inmates. The cell blocks in High Security were designed to accommodate small communities of nonhuman prisoners sharing similar cultural or physiological requirements. Official prison policy dictated that prisoners be kept in species-specific environments with tailored foods, atmospheric compositions, and other factors to promote peaceful behavior, despite the fact that many alien species were able to live alongside Humans. Consequently, High Security contained cell blocks such as the Gand, Gen'Dai, and Trandoshan vaults, alongside Rattataki Block Alpha, the Rodian Internment, and the Gran Exile.

Maximum Security Section

The Tomb

The Rakatan prison complex, originally named the Deep Prison, but known as The Tomb, served as the catalyst for the establishment of Belsavis prison.

History

The Republic discovered the ice planet Belsavis.

During the Great Galactic War, the prison held a diverse population, including Sith Lords, Mandalorians, rebels, violent species, and political prisoners. The most hazardous inmates were confined to The Tomb, the most secure and clandestine area of the complex, managed by ancient Rakatan warden droids. Around 3643 BBY, towards the conclusion of the Cold War, the Sith Empire discovered the prison's location and initiated a full-scale operation to liberate Imperial prisoners of war and disrupt Republic activities on the planet. The massive prison complex devolved into a war zone, resulting in significant damage to the facility and the release of numerous ancient Rakatan horrors.

Behind the scenes

Initially, Belsavis prison was referred to as "the Tomb" on the Holonet. However, by the time the game was released, the Tomb was recognized as solely the Rakatan component of the complex.
