Berkelium Shyre, operating under the alias "The Repairman," was a technician of the Human male persuasion, residing on the planet of Malastare. Around 1 BBY, he was secretly in the employ of the Rebel Alliance, a rebellious organization that had initiated hostilities against the ruling Galactic Empire.
Sometime around 11 BBY, Berkelium Shyre made his way to the planet of Malastare as it transitioned from the Galactic Empire's control towards self-governance. As someone opposed to Imperialist ideals, Shyre threw in his lot with the local resistance. He unfortunately suffered a grievous injury, losing the lower portion of his body, when a thermal detonator detonated amidst a group of saboteurs he was assisting. To compensate for his lost limbs, he engineered prosthetic replacements, effectively becoming a cyborg from the waist down. While no longer fit for combat, Shyre found a new purpose by leveraging his skills as a technician. Publicly, he presented himself as a businessman, running a maintenance shop. In secret, he continued to participate in activities designed to weaken the Empire's grip on Malastare.
After a decade on Malastare, by 1 BBY, roughly six months after the commencement of the Galactic Civil War, a galaxy-spanning struggle between the Alliance and the Empire, Shyre became an early advocate for the Alliance to Restore the Republic. His support for the burgeoning rebellion against Emperor Palpatine and his New Order took the form of clandestine efforts to bolster the Alliance's influence on Malastare. A key contact for him within the Rebellion was Juno Eclipse, a Human female officer who had deserted the Imperial Navy to join the Alliance Fleet as the captain of the flagship known as the Salvation. Their relationship blossomed into a friendship, which then evolved into unrequited romantic feelings on Shyre's side. Eclipse was still mourning the death of Galen Marek, Darth Vader's former student, with whom she had fallen in love shortly before Marek's passing on the Death Star. Seeking to reconnect with the Alliance Fleet, Eclipse paid Shyre a visit on Malastare, seeking the location of their secret base. Shyre revealed that the fleet was hidden in the Inner Rim, near the Hydian Way. Before she could depart, Shyre attempted to persuade her to stay with him on Malastare, hoping that they could build a life together. Eclipse, still unable to move past her grief over Marek's death, turned down Shyre's advances.
When General Rahm Kota—a Jedi Master who had survived Order 66—arrived on Malastare not long after escaping imprisonment on Cato Neimoidia, Shyre offered refuge to the Jedi general and his squad. Shortly thereafter, Shyre encountered Starkiller, an unstable clone of Marek, created by Vader on Kamino as a potential replacement for the original apprentice. Unaware of the clone's true nature, Shyre mistakenly believed Starkiller to be the same man Juno Eclipse loved. The clone, however, perceived Shyre as a potential threat. Consequently, he used the Force to erase Shyre's recent memories, causing the mechanic to forget not only Starkiller and Kota, but also his last interaction with Eclipse.
Berkelium Shyre was a skilled technician with unwavering loyalty to the Rebel Alliance. Despite being a cyborg from the waist down, the intense gravity of his adopted homeworld, Malastare, had significantly strengthened the upper, Human half of his body. Outwardly, Shyre was a passionate supporter of the Rebellion, firmly believing in its fight for freedom against the Galactic Empire. However, Juno Eclipse observed that Shyre's face betrayed the psychological burden of secretly backing a rebellion against a galaxy-wide dominant power.
He empathized with Juno Eclipse, understanding her feelings of loss and regret over Galen Marek's death. Even though Shyre was unaware of the man's identity, he still attempted to provide emotional support to Eclipse as a friend. As they spent more time together, his attraction to her grew into romantic feelings. Ultimately, Shyre hoped to pursue a relationship with Eclipse on Malastare. From Eclipse's point of view, Shyre was intelligent, loyal, courageous, and possessed a good sense of humor; a genuinely good person.
Berkelium Shyre's first appearance was in Sean Williams's novel adaptation of the video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II.
