The Black Spire Ruins, also known by local inhabitants as the old post or simply as the ancient ruins, were situated on the border of Black Spire Outpost on the planet of Batuu. These ruins, remnants of a long-ago settlement and the original outpost location, once served as a temporary encampment for the Resistance, chosen by them primarily for its suitability. Within this encampment, a DF.12 Com Turret guarded an entrance that opened directly into the ruins and a network of caves containing ancient artifacts and sacred sites. The Resistance established their command center within these caves, in some instances excavating the rock to create more space.
At one point, several Resistance recruits, along with BB-8, were urgently dispatched from this location to their respective fighters. Before a space battle against the First Order, a team of recruits embarked on a mission from the ruins aboard a transport, only to have their vessel captured and subsequently escape from a Star Destroyer.

Concept art revealed the Black Spire Ruins on Batuu, and they were also showcased as part of the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge model unveiled by Disney during the theme park area's planning and construction phases; Doug Chiang shared some information about the site in his interview. It was thought that this area would serve as the entrance to Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and later promotional materials substantiated this. Furthermore, a trading card titled "NEW RECRUITS RENDEZVOUS AT THE ANCIENT RUINS," released at the Galactic Nights event on December 16, 2017, provided details about the ride and confirmed that the location served as a staging ground for the Resistance, including BB-8.
