The Blood Carvers were a race of sentient beings resembling insects, who originated from the planet called Batorine.
These humanoids, known as Blood Carvers, possessed skin with a gold hue, along with dark eyes and noses shaped like beaks. They held strong beliefs in the Art Beyond Dying, and their blood was orange in color. Their unique noses functioned as both organs for smelling and for hearing. Within Blood Carver society, extension was an extreme punishment, representing a temporary banishment from the individual's clan. It was common for Blood Carvers to have tribal tattoos, often seen adorning their upper lips. The emotional state of a Blood Carver could be discerned by observing the position and color variations of their nose flaps, which indicated feelings such as anger, rage, respect, compliance, and homicidal intent.

The name "Blood Carvers" originated from the statues they crafted using blood from red trees. When a Blood Carver displayed a statue, they actively sought criticism of its imperfections, while praise was considered a grave insult. Individuals were even put to death for complimenting works of art. The purpose of these statues was to benefit the tribe as a whole, not the individual artist.
Another reason for their designation stemmed from their exceptional skills as assassins, although Blood Carvers rarely resorted to mutilating their targets. A traditional Blood Carver prayer, recited before engaging in battle, went as follows: "May my blade be sharp. May I sculpt a new fate for my enemies."
Centuries before the Battle of Naboo, the Lontars launched an invasion of Batorine, almost leading to the extinction of the Blood Carvers. Subsequently, the Blood Carvers joined the Galactic Republic in 110 BBY. The surviving members were relocated to Coruscant, where they maintained a secluded existence. By 29 BBY, their population on the planet had dwindled to only a few hundred. The Blood Carvers also established a colony on Alderaan prior to its destruction. Blood Carvers who were exiled from Batorine sometimes congregated in small, isolated communities of their own kind, occasionally in remote locations such as Nar Shaddaa and other worlds within the Outer Rim.
In 29 BBY, a Blood Carver known as Ke Daiv became the "first personal kill" of Anakin Skywalker, who was then a 12-year-old Jedi Padawan on a mission to Zonama Sekot alongside his Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
On their home planet of Batorine, Blood Carvers displayed unwavering loyalty to their respective tribes. Those who ventured beyond their world extended this loyalty to their new companions. With the exception of exiles, Blood Carvers rarely traveled alone. They found both flattery and excess to be offensive and typically held egoism and material wealth in disdain. Individuals exhibiting signs of greed or pride were banished from Batorine. While some Blood Carvers possessed Force-sensitive abilities, they generally formed their own groups of Force Adepts instead of joining the Jedi Order.
