The Lontars were a species possessing sentience, originating from the Lontar system situated in the northwestern part of the Colonies Region. Several centuries (measured in standard years) prior to the Galactic Republic's end, the Lontars attacked Batorine, a nearby planet within the Colonies and the homeworld of the Blood Carvers. The Blood Carvers were a secluded, feudal species renowned for their exceptional skill in assassination.
The Lontars achieved such a decisive victory over the Blood Carvers that they nearly caused their extinction. However, the Galactic Senate intervened in the conflict, compelling the Lontars to cease their attacks. While some Blood Carvers remained on Batorine after the Lontars stopped fighting, the majority of the survivors were relocated to Coruscant, the Republic's capital, where they lived in isolation before finally becoming part of the Republic in 110 BBY.
Greg Bear conceived of the Lontars for his novel Rogue Planet, which Del Rey published in 2000. They were later mentioned in The Essential Guide to Alien Species, authored by Ann Margaret Lewis and released in 2001. The Essential Atlas, which came out in 2009, specified the location of the Lontars' home star system, placing it in the same galactic grid as Batorine.
The exact timing of the Lontars' aggression against the Blood Carvers is somewhat ambiguous. In Rogue Planet, Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker describes the conflict as having transpired "hundreds of years ago." Additionally, the Blood Carver Ke Daiv states that his people were "swallowed by the Republic, taken in after [their] defeat." Conversely, The Essential Guide to Alien Species indicates that the Blood Carvers only joined the Republic in 110 BBY, a mere 81 years prior to Skywalker's statement.
