Brazen

The Brazen, an Imperial II-class Star Destroyer belonging to the Galactic Empire's Navy, operated in the Elrood sector under the command of Captain Alistar Dadefra.

History

Following the success of Khuiumin Survivors pirates led by Jacob Nive in raiding Imperial convoys, the Brazen was deployed to assist Moff Villis Andal within the Elrood sector. Initially, Dadefra achieved success by both reducing the frequency of pirate attacks and mitigating the conflict between Captains Tanda Pryl and Akal Zed of the Thunderflare and Stalker, respectively.

Subsequently, the Brazen was ambushed near the Degan Gas Clouds by the Khuiumin Survivors, who sought retribution for Dadefra's involvement in the Battle of Khuiumin. Although the pirates were ultimately defeated, the Brazen sustained significant damage: the concentrated assault resulted in the destruction of the lower, portside Gemon-4 ion engine, along with severe damage to the central and port Destroyer-I ion engines. The resulting surges of energy threatened the reactor core, but the engineering crew managed to divert most of the energy away, at the cost of most of their lives. Despite averting the ship's destruction, the overloads annihilated power feeds, armor plating up to two meters in thickness, and warped the superstructure.

Despite its severe damage, the Brazen managed to limp back to Derilyn, where a major riot had erupted following the infiltration of Rebel agents into the Arena of Games. The Empire imposed a complete lockdown on Derilyn and mobilized all available technicians for Operation: Elrood. While all of the Brazen's port engines required replacement, the facilities of the Derilyn Space Defense Platform lacked the capacity for comprehensive repairs. The revised plan involved conducting limited repairs on the Star Destroyer to enable it to reach the Imperial deepdock situated in the Metharian Nebula.

The same Rebel agents who instigated the earlier riot, supported by the resistance group Friends of Paran, infiltrated the space platform where the Star Destroyer was docked and plotted its destruction using improvised explosive devices placed at the now-exposed engines. Additionally, Rebel agent Shondra Del contacted the Khuiumin Survivors, who committed all their remaining forces to attacking the Star Destroyer. The operation was successful; the Brazen was destroyed, the platform suffered extensive damage, and Captain Dadefra perished in the battle.

Imperial HoloVision subsequently reported at 36:4:16 that the destruction of the Brazen was likely due to a worker error in proximity to the main reactor, while the Imperial Navy initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. Humiliated by this defeat, Moff Villis Andal and General Afren Hul were on the verge of losing their positions, although the Elrood sector remained an Imperial stronghold until the Battle of Endor.

Behind the scenes

The Brazen was conceived for the Operation: Elrood adventure supplement for the Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, published by West End Games. The infiltration of the Derilyn Space Defense Platform and the Star Destroyer's destruction served as the culmination of a three-part campaign set within the Elrood sector, with Captain Dadefra fulfilling a role analogous to that of Grand Moff Tarkin in the films.

The Brazen was depicted on the book's cover using a modified stock image of the Star Destroyer Avenger from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. Another image contained within the book was created by Mike Vilardi.
