The clash known as the Battle of Khuiumin unfolded as a suppression effort executed by the forces of the Galactic Empire against the Eyttyrmin Batiiv pirate group, culminating in the destruction of the latter. Those who managed to escape the conflict went on to establish the Khuiumin Survivors, dedicating themselves to exacting retribution on the Imperial officers who commanded the operation.
For a duration spanning years, the notorious band of pirates had been utilizing the Khuiumin system as their primary operational hub. Ultimately, the Emperor dispatched the Victory-class Star Destroyers Bombard, under the command of Captain Alistar Dadefra, and Crusader, led by Zlece Oonaar, with the mission to neutralize this menace. Despite being aware of the approaching Imperial fleet, the Eyttyrmin Batiivs held firm in their belief that they could overcome a pair of "outdated" Victory-class vessels. Instead of retreating, the pirates opted to concentrate their strength and confront the Imperials head-on at Khuiumin.
The pirate armada consisted of over 140 ships. This included approximately 70 starfighters, 50 missile boats that had been modified from yachts and other civilian craft, a few dozen cargo vessels equipped with makeshift weaponry, and 28 captured corvettes and patrol ships.
Bombard and Crusader emerged from hyperspace and immediately deployed their complement of TIE/LN starfighters. While Crusader provided support fire from a safe distance, Captain Dadefra made the decision to steer his Star Destroyer directly into the heart of the pirate formation. Despite being protected by its TIE fighter screen, the Bombard sustained significant damage. However, a daring maneuver executed by the Imperials shifted the momentum of the engagement in their favor.
Employing its tractor beam projectors, the Bombard ensnared several corvettes. Turbolaser barrages disabled the corvettes' weapon systems, and the immobilized vessels were drawn in to serve as shields for the Star Destroyer against incoming fire from other pirate ships. Captain Dadefra then ordered his crew to initiate communications jamming, causing widespread disarray within the pirate fleet. The Eyttyrmin Batiivs found themselves in a difficult situation: they were unable to effectively target the Star Destroyer, yet they hesitated to destroy their own capital ships. The pirates launched repeated, disorganized attempts to disable the Bombard's tractor beam projectors, but these efforts were thwarted by precise turbolaser fire and barrages of concussion missiles.
As the pirates continued their unsuccessful assaults on his vessel, Captain Dadefra deployed his contingent of Zero-G Assault Stormtroopers. Displaying courage in the face of enemy fire, the troopers traversed the void of space and seized control of the captured corvettes. Dadefra then transferred half of the Bombard's gunnery crew to these newly acquired ships. Suddenly confronted with not only Star Destroyers but also their own corvettes turned against them, the Eyttyrmin Batiiv forces descended into panic and chaos. A majority of the pirates attempted to escape the system by jumping into hyperspace. However, they were easily intercepted by the Crusader, which had maintained its position at a distance precisely for this purpose. Another group of pirates retreated to their base on Khuiumin's surface, where they prepared their defenses for a final stand. Those Eyttyrmin Batiivs who chose to continue the fight were utterly destroyed. The quick thinking of a young pirate named Jacob Nive rescued many of the remaining Eyttyrmin Batiiv from certain death, but was unable to alter the outcome of the battle.
In less than a day following the space battle, the Crusader delivered the decisive blow to the pirate base on Khuiumin. A relentless volley of assault concussion missiles shattered the base's shields and annihilated the remaining pirates. The Eyttyrmin Batiivs suffered a complete defeat. In a single engagement, their once formidable fleet was obliterated. Out of the original 8,000 pirates, fewer than 275 managed to survive. Imperial forces sustained minimal losses, with only 86 fatalities and 238 wounded.
The few pirates who survived managed to escape aboard a single corvette, the Backstab, with Captain Jacob Nive assuming leadership of what became known as the Khuiumin Survivors. These survivors eventually uncovered the identities of the Imperial commanders responsible for their defeat and swore vengeance. Jacob Nive transformed the group into a highly skilled mercenary organization, even incorporating smaller pirate factions into his ranks. Their opportunity for revenge finally arrived in 1 ABY, when the Khuiumin Survivors assisted the Rebel Alliance during the Battle of Derilyn, destroying the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Brazen, which had become Alistar Dadefra's flagship and tracked down and eliminated Zlece Oonaar.
Other survivors, under the direction of the pirate Omin, fled to the Tragan system, situated in the Outer Rim Territories. There, they established Providence, utilizing the remnants of their now inoperable starships.
The Battle of Khuiumin was first introduced in the short story titled Against the Pirate Armada, which was featured in West End Games' The Star Wars Sourcebook in 1987. When the game underwent an update to its Second Edition, the story was republished within the revised Sourcebook. Since then, the battle has been referenced in various works that involve the Khuiumin Survivors.
