Biography

Treasure hunter extraordinaire

Brin Hesk'l, a Human male, made his living as an adventurer, explorer, and treasure hunter as the Galactic Republic neared its end. Throughout his career, Hesk'l journeyed to numerous planets seeking valuable artifacts, exploring diverse locations such as abandoned Hutt fortresses, ancient Sith temples, and even the sewers beneath Coruscant. On one occasion, Hesk'l visited the Children's Museum on Coruscant, an establishment dedicated to showcasing the contributions of young individuals to the galaxy. While there, he noticed a crack in the floor, which, upon closer inspection, revealed a trigger mechanism that opened a secret chamber constructed by the original builders of the museum. Hesk'l entered the chamber and discovered important documents hidden inside. To chronicle his adventures, Hesk'l secretly began writing a book titled the Codex, where he meticulously recorded details of the places he had explored, the objects he had unearthed, and his reflections on the significance of his discoveries.

Investigating the Darkstaff

Sometime around 31 BBY, the Cularin system, a star system located within the Thaere sector, experienced a ten-year disappearance caused by the temporal effects emanating from the Darkstaff, a potent Sith artifact. This unusual event piqued Hesk'l's interest, and after the Cularin system reappeared in the galaxy around 21 BBY, during the time of the Clone Wars, the adventurer started investigating the reasons behind Cularin's vanishing. After illicitly accessing restricted archives, Hesk'l learned about the Darkstaff and its role in Cularin's temporary absence. Drawing upon his knowledge of a principle held by the Jedi Order, an organization of monastic warriors allied with the Galactic Republic, which stated that the Force must remain in balance, Hesk'l theorized that because the Darkstaff was saturated with the dark side of the Force, there must be an artifact radiating the light side of the Force present within the Cularin system to act as a counterweight to the Darkstaff. Hesk'l's hypothesis proved accurate; a powerful light side-imbued artifact known as the Eye of the Sun was hidden within the system, effectively neutralizing the Darkstaff's dark side power.

Driven by a desire to locate the hypothesized light side artifact and motivated by potential profit, Hesk'l journeyed to the Cularin system around 20 BBY to begin his search for the relic. After arriving on Cularin, the system's second planet, Hesk'l was invited to be interviewed on Eye on Cularin, a local news program produced by Cularin Central Broadcasting. During his appearance, Hesk'l answered questions from Ryk Osentay, a journalist, about his career and his reasons for visiting the Cularin system. Hesk'l shared his theory regarding the hypothetical counterbalance to the Darkstaff and expressed his intention to start his search by traveling to Thaere, the homeworld of a military force responsible for maintaining security within the Cularin system.

A mere two weeks after the interview, Hesk'l's starship was discovered abandoned and drifting in a comet cloud at the edge of the Cularin system, his whereabouts remaining a mystery.

Personality and traits

Hesk'l, a man known for his brashness and self-absorption, was a highly skilled and successful treasure hunter with a comprehensive understanding of his craft. He was drawn to treasure hunting by the thrill of infiltrating forbidden locations and unearthing long-lost objects. Hesk'l also possessed a profound passion for history, driven by a desire to understand past events and prevent future mistakes. He believed that luck was unnecessary in his pursuit of treasure, confident that the Force was on his side.

Hesk'l held the opinion that everything created had an exact opposite, leading him to hypothesize the existence of a counterbalance to the Darkstaff. While he considered Coruscant to be among his favorite worlds due to the availability of anything one desired in the metropolis, he also found it an uninteresting place to explore because of its extensive surveying. He preferred searching remote, rarely visited planets, believing that the greatest treasures could be found on unexplored worlds. However, he also acknowledged that treasure could sometimes be found in plain sight, in the most unexpected places. Despite the Thaereian military being engaged in a war with the Cularin Militia paramilitary force, he planned to venture to Thaere in his search for the theorized light side counterbalance to the Darkstaff. He dismissed the conflict as mere politics, believing that contentious political issues could always be resolved by engaging with the right people and asking the right questions.

Hesk'l possessed a swarthy complexion with short, straight black hair. He had large eyes and a prominent, crooked chin that appeared to have been damaged in numerous cantina brawls. During his interview with Ryk Osentay, Hesk'l maintained a wide smile, revealing his bright, white teeth and giving him a resemblance to a Caarite, a diminutive sentient species known for their amiable nature.

In addition to Basic, Hesk'l was fluent in Rodese and Ryl, able to speak, read, and write them. He also understood Shyriiwook. He was skilled in the use of blaster rifles and blaster pistols.

Equipment

Hesk'l owned and operated a starship. He carried a blaster pistol for self-defense, along with an exploration pack, spelunking equipment, and three aquata breathers, compact devices that allowed him to breathe in poisonous environments. He also wore a blast helmet and a blast vest for protection.

Behind the scenes

Brin Hesk'l was a character created by Morrie Mullins and featured in the Wizards.com article Into the Woods, published on July 15 2004. The article served as a tie-in to the Living Force roleplaying campaign and presented an interview with Hesk'l for the news program Eye on Cularin. He later received an entry in the 2008 reference book The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.

Into the Woods included roleplaying statistics for Hesk'l, suggesting that he could be used as a non-player character in roleplaying campaigns set in any publishing era. The article suggested introducing the adventurer into a roleplaying adventure by having the player characters encounter him just as he discovered a sought-after artifact. The article also suggested that players could encounter Hesk'l just as he had uncovered a link between some events that that another party had gone to great effort to conceal.
