Star Wars Roleplaying Game

Following West End Games' loss of the license to produce Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, their original roleplaying game, Wizards of the Coast began publishing their version of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game in November of 2000. The series concluded in April 2010 with the release of The Unknown Regions.

The game's rules, found in the core rulebook, are built upon the d20 System, which was also used for the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons. The gamemaster, one of the players, oversees the world, acting as both director and referee. The other players each control a single character, complete with skills and equipment, and some even possess the ability to wield the Force. This version of the game has additional sourcebooks that offer expanded background information and statistics for numerous elements of the Star Wars universe. This includes specifics on starships, guidelines for incorporating additional aliens, in-depth details about the Jedi order and dark side Force users, and information about regions of the galaxy, such as the Core Worlds or Outer Rim.

In 2002, coinciding with the theatrical release of Episode II, a Revised Core Rulebook was published, updating several rules and statistics. Subsequent books utilized this revised rules system, while maintaining compatibility with earlier publications. After Ultimate Adversaries in June 2004, Wizards of the Coast ceased producing new books for the Revised Edition, shifting their focus to the Star Wars Miniatures line. This decision stemmed from Wizards' agreement with Lucasfilm, which limited the number of Star Wars releases per year, coupled with the miniatures line's greater profitability compared to the roleplaying game.

On June 5, 2007, a new edition of the roleplaying game, known as the Saga Edition, was launched. At the Celebration IV convention that year, a free copy of the Saga Edition could be obtained by saying "Let the Wookiee win" to coauthor Rodney Thompson at the Wizards of the Coast booth. Additional sourcebooks, such as The Force Unleashed Campaign Guide and the updated Starships of the Galaxy, introduced further material and rules, including systems for organizations, starship maneuvers, and large-scale cinematic battles. Over the following three years, thirteen sourcebooks were released, representing a substantial line of new Star Wars roleplaying products. In addition to supplemental rules and statistics, the sourcebooks contain a considerable amount of background information. One notable example is the Jedi Academy Training Manual, which dedicates a significant portion to various Force traditions. Similarly, the Galaxy at War sourcebook features a chapter focused on military organizations. The Scavenger's Guide to Droids sourcebook is primarily background-focused, with fewer rules.

On January 28th, 2010, Wizards of the Coast made the announcement that they would be ending their Star Wars license after The Unknown Regions. The release of that sourcebook marked the end of both the Saga Edition Role Playing Game and the Star Wars Miniatures line. In 2011, Fantasy Flight Games acquired the license to publish roleplaying material, subsequently releasing Star Wars: Edge of the Empire.

Wizards.com hosted free web supplements for the roleplaying game, and their roleplaying column Jedi Counseling continued until 2009. Following the license expiration, these supplements were removed from the Wizards website.
