Star Wars: Edge of the Empire marks the beginning of the Star Wars Roleplaying game line, a set of roleplaying games designed to be compatible with one another and published by Fantasy Flight Games utilizing their license to produce games set in the Star Wars universe. A Beta version of the game saw its initial release at GenCon in August of 2012, with the announcement that Sterling Hershey was among the designers for the Beta test. On his blog, Hershey later revealed the titles of two follow-up games, specifically Age of Rebellion in 2014 and Force and Destiny in 2015.
A boxed Beginner Game was made available on December 17, 2012, followed by the more comprehensive Core Rulebook which was released on July 5, 2013.
On June 6, 2013, Hershey used his website to announce that the game's first full-length adventure, Beyond the Rim, had been completed and would be released in the 3rd Quarter of 2013.
