The Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beta Playtest, also known as the Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beta, represents a special softcover rulebook released by Fantasy Flight Games. This book served as the initial offering for the Star Wars: Edge of the Empire roleplaying game. Its initial release occurred on August 17, 2012, accessible through the Fantasy Flight Games online platform. Furthermore, it was distributed at both Gen Con 2012 and Celebration VI.
As part of the promotional Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beta Retailer Kit, the Beta featured five character sheets printed in full color.
A look behind the curtain Sterling Hershey, a developer involved in the Beta's creation, mentioned his contributions included writing "the Game Master chapter, the Beta test adventure, and some others [sections] that were not included in the Beta."
To streamline the playtesting process, a significant portion of the artwork and in-universe details that are found in the final version were omitted from the beta release.
Similarly, certain aspects included in the beta version either do not appear in the final Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Core Rulebook or underwent revisions.
