C8-42-GE3 was a droid of the GE3-series protocol type, situated on Dantooine during the era of the Jedi Civil War. He was the property of Elise Montagne's husband; upon the husband's passing, Elise inherited him, subsequently treating the droid as a surrogate for her deceased spouse. C8-42 found this behavior to be detrimental, leading him to flee and attempt self-destruction by exposing himself to kath hounds.
During 3956 BBY, while Revan was present at the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, Montagne requested that he locate and retrieve C8-42. Revan, accompanied by his companions, discovered the droid surrounded by kath hounds, which were trying to dismantle him. They eliminated the hounds, thereby saving the droid. However, C8-42 implored Revan to terminate him, believing that this action would break Elise's unhealthy fixation and enable her to form new relationships. Revan declined, arguing that the loss of her droid companion would deeply affect her. Consequently, C8-42 returned to Elise, who was awaiting him at the Jedi Enclave. Overjoyed at his return, they departed for their home together.
C8-42 is a character in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, where Revan, controlled by the player, is presented with multiple choices. These choices include ignoring Elise's request, sending C8-42 back to Elise, destroying C8-42 and attributing his destruction to the hounds in a lie to Elise, or destroying C8-42 and telling Elise the truth.
Should Revan destroy C8-42 and confess the truth to Elise, she seeks solace at the nearby Jedi Enclave. There, she encountered Samnt, with whom she cultivated a more balanced relationship. Their plans involved relocating to Coruscant.
If the player informs Elise that the droid could not be found, she ventures into the perilous plains in search of him. This action is considered a clear manifestation of dark-side alignment. In another alternative dark side outcome, rather than promising C8-42 that he would explain the droid's choice of destruction to Elise, Revan instead tells the droid he will destroy him and tell Elise he never found him. Appalled by Revan's cruelty, the harmless droid becomes enraged and attacks him, and is quickly destroyed. Revan can then lie to Elise, claiming C8-42 was unfindable, which results in Elise embarking on a futile search of the plains.
