The Calibops were a sentient species of avian descent that existed during the era of the New Republic. These beings possessed manes and wingtips capable of grasping objects. They were widely recognized for their superior verbal skills compared to their physical prowess, a characteristic even the Calibops themselves acknowledged.
Throughout the galaxy, several Calibops were observed, including Ponc Gavrisom, who served as Chief of State for the New Republic, Mif Kumas, who held the position of Sergeant at Arms, and an individual who was a member of Boba Fett's Mandalorian Protectors.
A Calibop was a sentient being of considerable height, resembling avian creatures. Some Calibops, at least one, possessed light blue eyes. They also featured a mane of feathers that could be shaken to express mild criticism. Calibops had sizable beaks that could produce a whinnying sound, akin to a sigh, or emit noises originating from deep within their throats. Their beaks were also responsible for generating a robust voice.
Although their large wings were not suitable for flight, Calibops could flutter them to increase their walking speed. These wings could be folded either in front or behind the individual and were strong enough to be used as weapons in close combat. The wingtips were prehensile, functioning like fingers, which Calibops used to operate controls or fidget restlessly. Additionally, Calibops possessed tails that they could flick, a gesture interpreted as their version of a shrug.
The Calibops were known for their exceptional rhetorical abilities, which sometimes overshadowed their proficiency in more physically demanding activities. While aware of this perception, many Calibops believed that words held value in certain situations, even when actions were deemed more effective.
As of 18 ABY, the Calibops were one of many sentient species integrated into the galactic community. A Human from the Galactic Empire could engage in a handshake with a Calibop.
Another Calibop, Mif Kumas, served as the Sergeant at Arms of the Galactic Senate from 21 ABY until 27 ABY, when the Senate was disbanded. In 29 ABY, a tall Calibop was observed among the Mandalorian Protectors, alongside Humans and Bothans, assembled by Boba Fett at Caluula Station, shortly before the station was attacked by the Yuuzhan Vong invaders.
The Calibops made their debut in the 1997 novel Specter of the Past, penned by Timothy Zahn. Their visual representation first appeared in The Essential Chronology.
