A Commissar held a position of power on the world of Grizmallt (planet). During the Clone Wars, which pitted the Galactic Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Commissars of Grizmallt and the Arch-Provost of Rendili started looking into the Acclamator-class transgalactic military assault ship. These ships were manufactured by Rothana Heavy Engineering, which was a division of Kuat Drive Yards. Eager to close the gap with their competition, they tasked several industrial spies and starship engineers with diminishing their competitor's advantage in securing fresh Republic deals. Utilizing Rendili's large shipyards located in the Mid Rim and Outer Rim Territories, they hoped to achieve a brief period of dominance.
The first mention of Commissars in current Star Wars canon occurred within the forty-ninth issue of the Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine by De Agostini, released around December 9, 2015.
