The Continent-class crawler represented a starship type utilized by the Kingdom of Shu-Torun. In 1 ABY, the Leviathan was deployed in the conflict against Jedha.
This Continent-class crawler was an enormous starship functioning as an orbital drill, designed for large-scale strip-mining operations. Comparable in size to a city, this vessel also housed a population equivalent to a small city, and was operated by a large contingent of droids, notably loadlifter droids. Outfitted with numerous drills and other mining instruments capable of excavating the mantle of a moon, it was transported into orbit around low-gravity moons by tugs. Its external hull was equipped with cannon placements, ion torpedos, and anti-air weaponry, effectively turning the vessel into a mobile fortress, and its armor was resistant to mines. A system of treads located beneath the vessel allowed it to traverse planetary surfaces, with a drill at the front continuously strip-mining the terrain. It was defended by a core security system, and included cargo bays and landing platforms on its upper surface.
The Kingdom of Shu-Torun and their associated miners employed Continent-class crawlers for off-world excavations of low-gravity moons. Queen Trios asserted its capability to excavate the mantle of an entire planet.
Following the Rebels' seizure of the drill citadel on the moon of Jedha, Trios introduced the Continent-class crawler, the Leviathan, to persist in strip-mining the moon for kyber crystals. Once towed into orbit above Jedha, the vessel symbolized Shu-Torun's allegiance to the Galactic Empire, given that the massive machine would be unable to achieve orbit again after deployment. The orbital drill entered Jedha's atmosphere and commenced strip-mining on a massive scale, observed by the Partisans. Ubin Des made an attempt to place mines in its path, but her offensive proved ineffective.
Chewbacca provided the Rebels with schematics of the Leviathan, enabling Leia Organa to devise a counter-strategy. Her team infiltrated the vessel by concealing themselves within cargo crates, and they gained control of the bridge with assistance from Trios, after the Queen declared she would sacrifice the machine for the safety of her people. With the Leviathan sabotaged, the Rebels, Trios, and Commander Kanchar made their escape as the machine collapsed into the blast crater created by the Death Star.
