Crane (bird)

A crane refers to a type of bird characterized by its possession of two legs, a pair of wings, and a beak. A crane relief was featured on the hilt of a lightsaber that had been handed down through successive generations of the Yasaburō clan, a prominent family residing on the planet known as Tao. Furthermore, depictions of golden color cranes, each holding flowers in their mouths, adorned the top and sides of the box used to store the aforementioned lightsaber.

The initial appearance of a crane image, although not explicitly identified at the time, occurred in "Lop & Ochō," a short film included in the first volume of the non-canon Star Wars: Visions series, which was penned by Sayawaka and directed by Yuki Igarashi. This animated short, produced by Geno Studio, was made available on Disney+ on September 22, 2021. Prior to the release of this short, images portraying cranes were initially showcased simultaneously in both the original Japanese and English dubbed trailers for the series, both of which were uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on August 17 of that same year.

The identification of the crane was made in the 2022 art book titled The Art of Star Wars: Visions, authored by Zack Davisson. The design of the Yasaburō clan's lightsaber, including the crane relief, was the work of Ren Ishimori, with concept art coloring provided by Yuichi Kuboki. In reality, cranes are a family of large, long-legged, and long-necked birds. In traditional bird and flower paintings, it is common to see the bird depicted with a flower in its mouth; therefore, a star-shaped flower was placed in the mouth of the crane depicted on the Yasaburō clan's lightsaber box.
