Damaris Viell, a vocalist at Jabba's palace and companion to the human Jess, had a past shrouded in mystery. Prior to her employment by Jabba, she was captured by a group of marauders operating in the Outer Rim. Her life before arriving on Tatooine remained largely unknown to her colleagues. Jess interpreted Viell's experiences as "visions," where she spoke of events yet to occur or past occurrences she couldn't possibly know. While others in Jabba's court theorized about brain trauma or spice addiction, Jess began to suspect Viell was connected to the Force.
On the very night Leia Organa launched her attempt to free Han Solo, Viell remained awake. She witnessed Solo's emergence from carbonite and the subsequent kiss between him and Organa, before their capture by Jabba. Viell and Jess were then forced to clean Organa and dress her in a dancing-girl costume. Later, in the courtroom, as the palace inhabitants drifted off to sleep, Viell had a vision. She declared that her chains would not restrain her. Jess, convinced of Viell's predictive abilities, inquired if she would inform Organa. Viell simply shook her head in response. Frustrated, Jess questioned the value of her power if she wouldn't use it to aid or protect others. Viell responded by saying she was unsure if her experiences were actually the Force, and that she sometimes felt she was traveling within her mind. The following day, Organa and her allies successfully broke free from Jabba's control.
