The Defense Force Command Compound served as the central military base for the Galactic Alliance Defense Force located on Coruscant. Constructed following the Galactic Alliance's successful recapture of the world from the Yuuzhan Vong, its purpose was to accelerate the symbolic relocation of the galactic capital away from Denon. A substantial underground bunker was included in the compound's design to provide protection from orbital attacks. The structure housed numerous rooms dedicated to planning and analysis, many of which were unfamiliar to Luke Skywalker, even though his counsel was frequently requested on military affairs during the period spanning the Yuuzhan Vong War and the Swarm War.
The underground section of the compound was referred to as "the Dark Star" by those serving in the Defense Force.
