Deppo

A male native of Eriadu, named Deppo, functioned as an Imperial Calibration Engineer. He was stationed on the World Devastator Silencer-7 during the era when the Galactic Emperor Palpatine was attempting to reclaim control of the galaxy. From his early years, he exhibited a strong inclination towards mending and playing around with various mechanical devices. However, his rebellious nature led him to associate with a local criminal group, ultimately resulting in his expulsion from his family home. Forced to be independent, Deppo started building a life for himself, until a specific event led him to begin employment with the Tarkin family.

Deppo pursued his interests, which led to his enrollment in engineering school and subsequent service at an Imperial base on Nyasko, before he was selected to work on one of the initial World Devastators. Deppo found satisfaction in his work, disregarding the potential future harm it could inflict on others. In 10 ABY, he was present during the Battle of Calamari. During this battle, the droid R2-D2 activated stolen control codes, causing the World Devastators to malfunction and eventually collide. Deppo managed to escape, but he was apprehended and detained by Mon Calamari authorities.

Biography

Early life

Deppo's homeworld, Eriadu

Eriadu, the planet where Deppo spent his childhood, was a manufacturing center. It also served as the base of operations for Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, who governed a large portion of the Outer Rim Territories. As a young person, Deppo enjoyed fixing swoop engines and taking rides around the various towers and smokestacks of his world. He eventually became involved with a gang of joysmashers, stealing speeders from the wealthy and engaging in reckless driving. At the age of eleven, he was ultimately kicked out by his parents. Now on his own, Deppo earned a living by disassembling various wrecks and selling the parts to dealers or using them to repair vehicles, which he would then resell.

Deppo's situation was stable, until he was discovered stealing a hoverbike belonging to the bodyguards of Rivoche Tarkin, who was Wilhuff Tarkin's niece. The guards, who seemed less brutal than typical Imperial guards, only stunned Deppo. Instead of facing enslavement in JuveCourt, he was offered a position as a junior technician in Grand Moff Tarkin's motor pool. This is where Deppo truly discovered his passion; he could modify and fine-tune all the sophisticated military vehicles to his heart's content. After years of dedicated work, the Tarkins sponsored Deppo for engineering school on his twentieth birthday.

Imperial service

Deppo received training at the academy to become a starship engineer. With the expertise he acquired and the excellent grades he achieved, Deppo could have demanded a high salary in the private sector. However, his only desire was to work on the best machines, which he believed were exclusively manufactured by the Empire. He eventually secured a position with an AT-AT walker battalion stationed on the remote planet of Nyasko. Given that Nyasko was situated in the Colunda sector, known for its significant Rebel presence, Deppo was constantly occupied with repairing sabotaged and battle-damaged vehicles resulting from frequent conflicts.

Under Admiral Comeg, Deppo served on Silencer-7.

Deppo was later reassigned to Admiral Comeg's fleet in the Deep Core, where he was presented with the opportunity to work as a Calibration Engineer on a prototype Imperial superweapon—a World Devastator. Aboard the Devastator, named Silencer-7, Deppo was in charge of the automated factories that mass-produced attack craft using raw materials extracted from the surface of planets. He, along with the Assembly Commander, was responsible for maintaining the factories' high production rate during combat.

In 10 ABY, a large contingent of World Devastators were dispatched to the planet Mon Calamari as part of the reborn Emperor Palpatine's plan to regain control of the galaxy. Silencer-7 spearheaded the assault on the planet and its New Republic defenders until the astromech droid R2-D2 employed stolen control codes, provided by the turncoat Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, to disable the Devastators' shields and defensive ion cannons. As New Republic Sea Commandos and Calamari Defense Force troops boarded the crippled Silencer-7 and began breaching its factory levels, Deppo panicked and fled in an escape pod just as the Devastator crashed onto the planet's surface. Deppo survived, only to find himself drifting towards the very Mon Calamari city that the Devastators had just attempted to besiege. Eventually, a New Republic Amphibion discovered him, and he was compelled to surrender. He was handed over to Mon Calamari authorities, where he was imprisoned as a prisoner of war.

Personality and traits

Deppo was a daring young individual who demonstrated exceptional mechanical skills from an early age, showing little to no interest in anything other than working on vehicles and vessels. As he matured, he became deeply committed to his work, to the point where he failed to recognize the extent of death and destruction that his efforts would ultimately cause.

Equipment

Among the items he carried while working on World Devastators were a tech sealed suit, a breather unit, a monofusion welder, various tools and clips, and a datapad connected to a Devastator's central computer. Deppo typically wore dark-colored clothing.

Behind the scenes

Deppo made his debut appearance in the sixth issue of the Star Wars: Dark Empire comic-book series. The comic was authored by Tom Veitch, illustrated by [Cam Kennedy](/article/cam_kennedy], and published by Dark Horse Comics on October 20, 1992.
