Near the conclusion of the Battle of Haruun Kal, a duel known as the Duel at Pelek Baw unfolded between Jedi Master Mace Windu and Depa Billaba, his former Padawan. Mace's initial purpose in traveling to his home world, Haruun Kal, was to retrieve Depa, who had engaged in actions of dubious morality while associated with the Korunnai terrorist organization led by Kar Vastor. Following a confrontation with Kar Vastor, Mace collaborated with the Korunnai to repel an assault by combined Balawai militia and Separatist forces. However, Depa and Kar betrayed Mace once more, culminating in a lightsaber duel within the central command bunker located in the City of Pelek Baw.
After clone troopers used explosives to force open the door, Mace discovered Depa seemingly unconscious. Meanwhile, Kar Vastor utilized the Force to conceal himself in the shadows. Depa, who had been feigning unconsciousness, surprised Mace by stabbing him in the abdomen with her lightsaber. Mace managed to seize the lightsaber and deactivate it, preventing a fatal wound. Subsequently, they disengaged and assumed the ready stance characteristic of Vaapad, a weaving pattern.
During their duel, Nick Rostu and clone troopers engaged Kar Vastor and his Akk Guards in combat.
Following an intense exchange of blows, indicative of a clash between two Vaapad masters, Depa inflicted another superficial wound on Mace's chest. Due to his injuries and the emotional distress of battling someone he regarded as a daughter, Mace surrendered and deactivated his lightsaber. Just as Depa was about to deliver the final blow, she regained her senses. She apologized to Mace and positioned the emitter of her deactivated lightsaber against her temple. Before she could take her own life, Nick Rostu shot the pommel of the lightsaber out of her hand. Instead of a lightsaber blade piercing her brain, she was left in a comatose state.
At that moment, Kar Vastor taunted Mace. Mace attempted to persuade him that the battle had concluded, but Vastor launched an attack regardless. Mace evaded Vastor's assault and used the Force to impale him with a vibroshield from a deceased Akk Guard. He then placed the injured Vastor under arrest.
