The ELX-25 prototype long-range cannon represented an experimental weapon system conceived by the Galactic Republic to function as a type of artillery during the era of the Cold War. It was anticipated by the Sith Empire that these long-range weapons would not be ready for deployment for several years, but they were used in planetary conflicts. Nevertheless, this experimental cannon saw deployment at Fort Salvo located on the planet Ilum when the Sith were in the process of conquering the world.
During this period, Admiral Shai of the Republic Military took on the responsibility of initiating the operational testing of the ELX-25 prototype. After an encounter with an Imperial spacer, he instructed a Lieutenant to enter the coordinates of the Imperial base. This action greatly surprised Grand Moff Ilyan Regus, who had believed the cannon was still in the conceptual phase. The Grand Moff successfully determined the cannon's location by analyzing its operational range and the origin of Admiral Shai's transmission. Consequently, he tasked a Sith spacer with the destruction of the weapon. The Imperial operative then discovered the concealed control center for the cannon and initiated an overload sequence, leading to its destruction.
