Fort Salvo, also identified as the Republic waystation, functioned as a significant installation for the Republic Military and was situated within the Eastern Ice Shelf on the planet of Ilum.
Constructed on top of an elevated ice formation, the fort's upper section featured artillery systems and power generators, both operated by Republic soldiers. A research center was integrated into the mesa's foundation, with access from the canyon floor located north of the fort. Additionally, a modest Republic outpost was carved into the mesa's southern face, acting as a stopover along the Road to Glory.
During the Battle of Ilum against the Sith Empire, the Republic waystation housed personnel including General Orias, Major Dumerin, and Captain Sarmuk.
Imperial forces targeted Fort Salvo as a component of Operation Dark Ice, an initiative led by Darth Malgus and Grand Moff Regus. Initially, Delta Squad was unsuccessful in deactivating the ray shield that defended the base. Subsequently, the shield generators were eliminated by the Empire's Wrath, Darth Nox, Cipher Nine, and the Hunter. This group then gained entry to the base with the objective of destroying Fort Salvo's artillery positions and the ELX-25 prototype long-range cannon.
